The Chevy Blazer EV Has A Ridiculously Small Rear Window Wiper

The 2024 Chevy Blazer EV was unveiled in July of the 2022 calendar year, introducing the first production-spec all-electric crossover to wear the Chevy Blazer nameplate. In addition to a high-tech GM Ultium powertrain, the Chevy Blazer EV also presents unique styling that sets it apart from the regular ICE-powered Blazer lineup. Notably, the Blazer EV design incorporates a ridiculously small rear window wiper.

Looking at images of the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV rear end, the minuscule rear wiper looks almost comical. The wiper appears to be slightly longer than the rear Chevy Bow Tie badge, and would only cover a small percentage of the crossover’s rear glass.

Granted, the small rear wiper is a result of the shape of the rear window, which is quite wide, but also very short in terms of overall height. As such, there really isn’t any extra room to fit a larger wiper, as something longer would likely scrape the top of the rear window.

One possible solution to this would be to fit two small wipers side by side, but some might consider that a bit of an overkill solution for something that really isn’t much of an issue to begin with. After all, the rear window wiper really only needs to provide a clear view of what’s directly behind the vehicle. Not that GM doesn’t shy away from overkill solutions – the three front wipers equipped by the GMC Hummer EV certainly comes to mind. The Blazer EV RS can also be equipped with GM’s Rear Camera Mirror as part of the (RPO code ZL5) Convenience and Driver Confidence Package.

Meanwhile, this “problem” is solved in another way on the Cadillac Lyriq and Buick Envista, both of which aren’t equipped with any rear wiper whatsoever. We should also mention the Chevy Equinox EV, which has a taller rear window, and with it, a more purposeful wiper.

As a reminder, the Chevy Blazer EV features GM Ultium batteries and GM Ultium Drive motors, with the GM BEV3 platform providing the underpinnings. Production takes place at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.

  2. Is there room to mount the wiper beneath the overhang of the roof instead?

  3. with a camera enabled rear view mirror, the rear wiper is really not needed

    1. After I read your comment I had to go outside and check the one on my ’94 Blazer. (Still works, but it’s in terrible shape. Time to reorder)

  5. This is really worth writing about??

Oh my, whatever did we do before rear window wipers surfaced on hatchbacks?!!

Looking through the rear window glass and it can be noticed that the rear wiper clears the area of the glass that corresponds with the driver’s view line between the seat head rests.

Many rear wipers are only around 12″ in length. E.G. Checking my wife’s ’15 GMC Terrain, the rear wiper blade is 13″ long for a window that is 20″ tall, wiping a 13″ swath within 1.5″ of the top of the glass. The distance of the wiper from the pivot point affects the actual wipe area.

It wipes an area measuring 32″ wide across the glass, since the wiper blade is a few inches from the pivot point of the wiper arm.

So, while small, that little wiper likely has a surprising area of coverage on that small window and doesn’t affect area around the back of the vehicle like as large wiper on a taller glass would.

  6. I still have my reservation. I would have never noticed this or cared. I might have to replace it every 10 years.

  7. Could this be an articulated wiper that extends out – think Mercedes.

  10. Snow country need a rear wiper with washer fluid. When the salt covers the rear window driving on slushy roads, it also coats the rear camera. I had a 79 Impala wagon and no rear wipers on any wagon and you cannot see out the back at all. No issue in Florida.

  11. It’s the result of terrible design with that rear window being so small. Enough of this “form before function” total nonsense!

  12. I think I would enjoy driving a Blazer EV. Especially the acceleration.
It is too expensive for me, so I will have to wait for something more affordable in a GM BEV.
After 32 gasoline powered cars that I have enjoyed owning and driving over my 53 years of driving, I am now looking forward to my first battery electric vehicle. It may be two years from now, maybe three.

  13. Wiper mounting from the bottom just collects dirt. U can’t lift the blade, it’s a bad design. I have 2 suvs like this. Still dirty after squeegeeing at the gas station, time consuming, wasting

  15. Can we have a discussion about why the RS AWD which was supposed to be delivered to dealerships this summer are not in yet and no one seems to know anything about it? The only sliver of information I’ve gotten is the last time I called the dealership they thought they would be in by the end of March 2024. I check for some kind of news every week or so on-line and there’s nothing…
