NASCAR Chevy Teams Tail Ford In 2023 Xfinity Series Championship

Two NASCAR Chevy teams – the No. 7 Camaro of Justin Allgaier and the No. 1 Camaro of Sam Mayer – set out after the Xfinity Series championship at Phoenix Raceway on November 4^th, 2023, but both walked away disappointed as they were outclassed by the No. 00 Ford Mustang of Cole Custer in a late-race restart.

Allgaier had control of the lead, snatching it away from the No. 20 Toyota TRD Supra of John Hunter Nemecheck as the laps ticked down. However, Allgaier’s No. 7 NASCAR Chevy proved to be no match for Custer’s Mustang, as the trio went three-wide after a late-race restart. Allgaier made one final attempt to pass Custer, but couldn’t make it stick, tailing the eventual 2023 Xfinity Series champion across the line by 0.601 seconds.

The result was quite the blow to Allgaier, who spun out on Lap 3 and battled back to the front after running in 38^th place.

“I don’t know if I’ll get another shot at it again next year,” said Allgaier. “We at least will have a shot at it, but I don’t know if we’ll make it. But so proud of the effort of this team and what we were able to accomplish. The restart was fantastic. I thought we did everything right… I don’t know, I’m going to replay this one back in my head a couple times. I drove in there pretty deep and just kind of washed up. The 00 had the turning car all night, and we were just a little bit too free.”

Allgaier ultimately finished third, tailing Custer and the No. 2 Camaro of Sheldon Creed, who finished second. Mayer, the other NASCAR Chevy team up for the championship, finished fifth.
