Icon has a new build to show off, this time retrofitting a classic 1970 Chevy Suburban with all-new underpinnings, a wealth of custom touches, and a twin-turbo V8 producing 1,000 horsepower. Built to comfortably cruise with four passengers and a storage unit’s worth of cargo room, this custom 1970 Chevy Suburban mates new and old in lovely harmony. Now, we’re taking a closer look thanks to the following feature video.
Clocking in at a little under 30 minutes, the video describes at length what went into the build and the motivation behind it. Playing host is Icon co-founder Jonathan Ward, who leads the viewer through all the interesting details, while providing several interesting insights along the way.
“This project took thousands of man hours and several years to complete, but I am happy to say that me and the whole team are so proud of it and excited to share it with you,” Ward says. “I think it’s a really good example of, at root, Icon’s effort to revisit classic transportation in a modern context.”
The build was commissioned by one of Icon’s repeat customers, who wanted a high-powered, yet comfortable cruiser with loads of space inside the cabin. The starter vehicle was relatively clean, but Icon wasted no time in stripping it down for a full ground-up rebuild.
Highlights include an Art Morrison chassis, custom four-door body, four-wheel independent suspension, a bespoke interior, and a twin-turbo 427 from Nelson Racing Engines. Check out the full feature below:
Later this month, Icon will host the Icons of Design event, sponsored by Hagerty and William Henry. The event will take place at the Hagerty Garage in Van Nuys, California, on November 19th, 2023, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., and will feature art, fashion, and independent craftsman of all types, including footwear, watches, antiques, knives, and of course, automotive and motorcycle brands as well. The Reformer Series 1970 Chevy Suburban will also be on display at the event. Proceeds will benefit the GO Campaign, a non-profit focused on improving the lives of children around the world.
