Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Combined GMC Yukon sales – those of the regular-length Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL – kept the duo in second place in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during the third quarter of 2023 when ranked by sales volume, a spot it earned nearly two years ago by outselling the Ford Expedition and all other segment rivals, with the exception of the two Chevy entries.

Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) placed first with a seven percent dip to 27,578 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed with a nine percent slip to 17,061 units. The Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) placed third with an 11 percent slip to 12,083 units. The GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales), took fourth with a seven percent dip to 11,763 units, followed by the GMC Yukon XL (see running GMC Yukon XL sales) in fifth with a nine percent bump to 9,395 units. As before, the two GMC Yukon models combined outsold the Ford duo, this time by over 4K units. The Jeep Wagoneer, which includes the regular-length Wagoneer and extended-length Wagoneer L, placed sixth with a 44 percent drop to 7,248 units, while the Nissan Armada took seventh with an 11 percent swell to 4,532 units. The Toyota Sequoia finished out the list with 3,768 deliveries, up from just 21 a year ago as the redesigned 2023 Sequoia continues to regain the SUV’s footing and potentially improve its overall sales performance.

The GM Authority Take

While GMC Yukon sales were flat, Big Red’s full-size SUV duo continues to solidly outsell the Ford Expedition family, with over 4K more deliveries during this quarter. Combining the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL with their corporate cousins, the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, gives GM control of two-thirds of mainstream full-size SUV segment, a very profitable space that’s key to GM’s financial health.

In fact, that’s why the UAW eventually expanded its strike to the GM Arlington plant in Texas as contract negotiations stalled. Fortunately, the GM-UAW labor contract was just ratified, so we’ll see if the nearly four-week shutdown impacts Yukon sales to close out the year. Before then, the facility was running at full capacity, with no room to produce more units.

The arrival of the Professional Grade brand’s updated premium models will undoubtedly further secure GM’s command of the lucrative full-size SUV segment, which is second only to the bread-and-butter full-size truck space.
