Certain units of 2020 through 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 and 2020 to 2024 GMC Sierra HD pickup trucks, as well as 2021 to 2024 GMC Yukon SUVs, equipped with one of several available Duramax diesel engines, are included in a GM service bulletin providing a fix for issues related to a malfunctioning diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) sensor.
The service bulletin also applies to a similar problem affecting the Chevy Silverado pickup truck, Chevy Tahoe SUV and Chevy Suburban SUV motivated by the same trio of Duramax engines.
The DEF sensor measures the amount of DEF fluid in the vehicle’s DEF tank. In the case of affected GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon units, the DEF sensor may function erratically, provide incorrect readings, or become stuck. DEF sensor glitches can cause reduced torque output in some situations, though GM does not specify if this is the case for this particular issue.
The driver information center (DIC) in affected GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon units may show the “Service Emission System” warning message, the “DEF Level Low” warning message, or both. Additionally, an affected vehicle’s Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) may stay on continuously, though it may also fail to illuminate in some vehicles.
Dealership service personnel can carry out the fix without replacing any components, so no additional parts need to be ordered. The remedy consists of using the most recent, correct calibration to reprogram the K115 Reductant Control Module.
It may also be necessary to add one gallon of diesel exhaust fluid to the DEF tank of some affected Sierra or Yukon units. Hardwired connections should be used for the programming, since if the process is interrupted – a possibility with a wireless connection – the Reductant Control Module could be damaged.
The engines, models, and model years listed below are involved in this service bulletin:
Duramax turbodiesel 3.0L I6 LM2 engine:
- 2020 to 2022 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2021 to 2024 GMC Yukon
Duramax turbodiesel 3.0L I6 LZ0 engine:
- 2023 to 2024 GMC Sierra 1500
Duramax turbodiesel 6.6L V8 L5P engine:
- 2020 to 2024 GMC Sierra HD
If they have additional questions, GMC Sierra and Yukon owners who may have affected vehicles powered by one of the aforementioned three Duramax diesel engines can reach GMC customer service at the telephone number following, referring to the service bulletin’s identifying number if necessary:

Good thing they have all the testing, engineering departments and computers plus 100+ years of experience so they don’t send stuff out that don’t work. OH. WAIT……
Typical total screwup. Makes one wonder if ‘GM’ stays for General Mess’ ?
What do expect they still can’t make white paint stick to their trucks…eh?
Why do you think that they chage $495 fora paint color?
My 2021 Silverado High Country is a towing beast. Best tow vehicle ever!! We tow a 5th wheel coast to coast and could not be happier with our truck’s comfort and performance. Minor issues like a DEF sensor are to be expected in high tech vehicles.
Don’t waste your time on this service bulletin. My 2021 2500hd with the duramax has been popping up that I only have so many miles before out of def yet it is full so I took in and had the software update as per the service bulletin ( under warranty) and it didn’t fix sh!t so basically I wasted most of the day and 60 miles. I love the truck but what idiot felt it was necessary to have software tied into a fluid level gauge? This service bulletin is a waste of time and I feel that the gm engineers that came up with this couldn’t replace the cap on the def filler neck.
Would be nice to buy a GMC SIERRA with less problems. 2024 model year with 3.0 Duramax has def issues and a bunch of electrical problems. I.E. – windows roll down, seat heaters don’t work, gps coaxial cable has a short ( error code), nitrogen oxide code…sad day for gmc
