The 2024 GMC Sierra 3500 HD pickup was recognized with a model-level award in the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Awards, marking it as one of 28 nameplates projected to keep the highest percentage of their original value three years after purchase.
ALG, the branch of analysis firm J.D. Power that handles automotive residual value projections, chose the 28 models – including the GMC Sierra 3500 HD – out of a field of 293 competing nameplates, the study reports.
The GMC Sierra 3500 HD was the only vehicle from Big Red to receive the award for the 2024 model year, However, two Chevrolet models – the Chevy Corvette and Chevy Trax – were other GM nameplates to win the award in their respective segments. The Sierra 3500 HD was the top model for highest three-year residual value in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment.
Other top models in the three pickup segments include the Toyota Tundra, winner in the Large Light Duty category, and the Toyota Tacoma, the top retainer of value among Midsize trucks. The Ford F-150 Lightning received a U.S. residual value award, too, but was counted as a “Mass Market Electric Vehicle” rather than a pickup.
The J.D. Power study is particularly handy for figuring out which vehicles retain the most value at the end of a three-year lease. Those with the best design, quality, and desirability, both in terms of the individual model and the brand overall, are the vehicles likely to keep the highest percentage of original value 36 months down the road.
The study also weighs other factors in making its residual value forecasts and awards. These include options and features, current trends and economic conditions, and even the weather and climate. Algorithmic modeling, artificial intelligence, and skilled human analysts then determine the winner in each automotive segment.
As a reminder, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD debuts the mid-cycle refresh of the heavy-duty truck’s fifth generation. The model year introduces the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate along with an exterior and interior overhaul across the trim level lineup. The model also gets new technology such as available Adaptive Cruise Control and a 36,000-lb towing capacity with the ProGrade trailering system.
Powerplant options include the standard 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine and optional 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine. The latter is upgraded to supply an SAE-certified 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. Both use the GM 10-speed automatic transmission for cog swaps.
Production of the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD is currently under way and takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan.

When they get done patting themselves on the back they’ll likely add a couple more zeros to the price tag.
