Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

While GMC Hummer EV family sales continued to grow during the third quarter of 2023, the duo has a lot of catching up to do when it comes to Rivian, which currently commands this space. The Hummer EV Pickup‘s 874 deliveries pale in comparison to the Rivian R1T’s 8,200, while the Hummer EV SUV moved 293 units to the Rivian R1S’s 11,000.

While this is a very small and nascent speciality space comprised of off-road-focused electric supertrucks and SUVs, the 323 percent growth rate is quite impressive, giving GM a five percent segment share, while Rivian has the rest.

GM’s only other EVs currently on sale are the Cadillac Lyriq and Chevy Silverado EV Work Truck (WT), as well as the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV.

The GM Authority Take

While GMC Hummer EV family sales remained very low during the third quarter of 2023 as a result of limited production volumes, GM has at least recorded some Hummer EV SUV sales. And while the Rivian family far outsells the Hummer EV duo, Rivian is reportedly losing $33K per vehicle sold. We wonder how long the startup automaker will be able to sustain that as it burns through about $1 billion of its cash reserves quarterly even if it manages to reduce the loss per vehicle as economies of scale kick in with higher production levels.

For its own part, GM is working on ramping up GMC Hummer EV production, which it did in May, building 2,590 total units of both the Pickup and SUV, followed by 2,750 combined units in June and 2,439 cumulative units in July. GM has built 11,058 GMC Hummer EV units so far during the 2023 calendar year (January through July). By comparison, over 5,000 units of the Hummer EV Pickup were produced in 2022.

Earlier this year, GM said it plans to strongly increase GMC Hummer EV production volume during the second half of the 2023 calendar year. That would certainly help the automaker make a dent in filling 90,000 reservations of both models. The automaker stopped taking reservations for both battery electric Hummer models around the 90,000 mark.

About 75 percent of those reservation holders are new to the GMC brand, with the majority of customers living in California, Texas, or Florida. Additionally, 70 percent of reservation holders are first-time EV buyers.

Still, GM EV production targets are challenged by battery supply. The automaker aims to be the electric vehicle sales leader in North American by mid-decade, announcing early last year that it expects to reach a capacity of one million EV units in North America by the end of 2025. That goal will likely be hampered by limited supplies of batteries and a slow production ramp-up at its new U.S. battery plants.

The GM Ultium Cells plant in Ohio is now running at 75 percent capacity, but completion of GM’s Ultium Cells Spring Hill plant has been delayed.

At the end of the day, production volume is the biggest constraint to growing sales of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV, much like it is with the Lyriq and Silverado EV. For its part, General expects the Hummer EV SUV variant to account for roughly 60 percent of total Hummer EV sales, and the Pickup variant to make up the remaining 40 percent.

Both Hummer EV models ride on the GM BT1 platform, powered by Ultium Batteries and Ultium Drive motors. A different variant of the same architecture underpins the Chevy Silverado EV and upcoming GMC Sierra EV.

About GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup began in June, with the nameplate introducing a handful of important updates and changes over the preceding 2023 model. That includes the launch of two entry-level trim levels – the 2X and 2. They will join the range-topping Edition 1 and 3X trims to round out the all-electric Hummer off-road pickup truck lineup for the 2024 model year.

Another important update for the 2024 Hummer EV Pickup is the introduction of the new Omega Edition, a limited-run variant that includes a unique matte paint finish, unique wheels, and a few other unique accents.

About GMC Hummer EV SUV

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV launched with the Edition 1. “About 2,500” units of the Edition 1 will be built, featuring standard 22-inch premium wheels, assist steps, and floor liners, as well as all-wheel-steering. Motivation is sourced from a three-motor drivetrain and 20-module battery pack, providing a maximum 830 horsepower and more than 300 miles between charges. It comes with an exclusive Moonshot Green Matte paint highlighted by complementary black and silver trim bits to provide a splash of custom flair to the special edition of the SUV’s inaugural year.

The Edition 1 join the 3X trim to round out the all-electric Hummer off-road SUV for the 2024 model year.

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV also gets the new Omega Edition, like the Pickup. Additionally the SUV receives a new Bronze Beadlock Package, which includes a few bits and pieces to enhance the off-roader’s capabilities, as well as complementary styling bits to go with the theme. And an Extreme Off-Road Package will be available for the Hummer SUV EV2X and EV3X trim levels, in addition to the range-topping GMC Hummer EV SUV Edition 1.

Finally, the 2024 Hummer EV SUV gets a power-operated swing gate, setting it apart from the Pickup, which incorporates the manually-operated MultiPro tailgate with six functional load/access features and EZ Lift operation.

  1. The most novelty of all [novelty] EV trucks. Silverado EV is going to flop on arrival, the Lightning has shown what the Chevy is in for. These brands saw profit margins and tried to force the market, that’s not how it works unless you’re maybe Apple or Tesla.

  2. People will buy the Hummer EV for the status alone however its still a joke how low GMC can produce these at volume.

  3. This shows failure after failure at GM MANEGMENT!!! THIS HUMMER TRUCK CAME OUT YEARS AGO WITH HUGE HYPE, CYBERTRUCK WAS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT BEFORE IT BUT ROYALLY TESLA SCREWED THAT UP, Leaving GM a whole year or two to hit hard with Hummer volume while it was a huge media hit. Now the iron has gone cold, and GM cannot figure out anything about bringing EVs to market. Gm needs to wake up, either you are going to do EVs or you are going to let companies like Hyundai, Kia and VW walk away as the top selling EVs. KIA IS KILLING IT. WAKE UP MARY BARRA, us GM loyalists keep getting disappointed in your team. Where’s our Bronco Fighter, why did you not give us a new Camaro when the Iron was hot and a new design language for the Camaro years ago. You are finally listening on giving us wicked offroad trucks, but where is our Raptor fighter,

  4. Can somebody please explain me why GM built 11000+ Hummer EV units during 2023 but only sold 1,216? Something is very fishy here or is it that I am missing something?

I am a reservation holder and would like to know what’s going on here.

Also, why hasn’t GMAuthority reported the production numbers for the last 2-3 months?

    Reply
    1. I’m also a reservation holder. It does not appear that anyone has a real explanation for this. GM will not answer when asked. Very disappointing experience overall for buyers.

I am also curious about this, I check every month. I am guessing they got tired of reporting it when it doesn’t matter because the units aren’t actually being shipped. I think GM has been playing around with how they report vehicles being built. Clearly, they aren’t completely built and being shipped.

      1. Clearly GM is faking the Hummer EV numbers; there is no way they can have more than 12000 Hummer EVs stored and completely built and not selling them, not even partially built.

How GM Authority reports these small numbers for sales together with the 16 000+ builds and DOES NOT question what’s going on.

  5. I still find it amazing that there are this many people with the money to buy a Hummer.

Impressive that GM increased EV sales by 145% and kicked out 56,000 EVs in the process. I see Chevy Bolts on the road often now. Seems like the GM EV sales are going in a very positive direction. I am impressed with a 145% increase to sales of any vehicles (including ICE vehicles), and 56,000 total isn’t small volume anymore (according to EPA 5,000/year is small volume).

    1. There are over 20 million millionaires in the US alone, and around 1000 billionaires. Not hard to fathom the low number of Hummers have been bought.

  6. Hahahahaha. What a joke. GM needs to pull the plug on this (pun totally intended) and kill off these pigs now. Then redirect all those resources and materials to make way more EV’s for the masses instead of the filthy rich.

  7. WOW, record 3rd quarter for GM US EV sales of 20,367 units. Overall 3rd quarter for GM US sales of 674,336 units.
So 3% of the sales in the quarter were EV’s.
GM’s updated EV production timelines, the automaker plans to have more than 1 million units of EV capacity in North America by the end of 2025?

    1. And the Chevy Bolt outsold more than 20 of the other GM ICE models, including the entire Cadillac division. This result even though the Bolt is being discontinued in 2024 (which drives sales down like it did to the Camaro).

    1. thats a dumb statement…i bought one of these things and have the brains to realize i can sell it in 2 years and get almost all my money back. I was “smart” enough to ask my dealer for the demo unit and got it for MSRP.

I have owned many “fun” exotic vehicles…this one takes the cake, I am racing it around with Porches, Ferraris, and Lambos that my friends own. You cant put a price on that kind of fun. I also take great joy in pulling into my kids baseball games and seeing all the pickup trucks parked that I would never buy.

Imagine if they stop making this thing cause of production issues. I wonder what used ones will sell for?

Smart folks make money, cause they are smart.
Smart folks buy moonshots, so they don’t lose money
