GM Considering Second-Gen Cadillac XT5 For North America

Back in 2022, GM Authority reported that the next-generation Cadillac XT5 would be exclusive to the Chinese market, per statements made by GM President Mark Reuss. GM’s original plan was to discontinue the XT5 in North America and offer a second-generation XT5 exclusively in China. Now, however, GM Authority has learned that a team at General Motors is currently looking at a business opportunity for the next-gen Cadillac XT5 in North America.

The next-generation Cadillac XT5 testing as a camouflaged prototype.

Back in 2022, GM President Reuss discussed future GM products during the Investor Day event, including the redesigned Cadillac XT5. During a presentation, Reuss indicated that the crossover “is for China only, as we move Cadillac in the United States to an all-electric brand.”

“The XT5 is still a very high-volume segment in China, and we’re going to do that with a new design language interpretation, both inside and out,” he added.

Earlier in 2023, GM Authority reported that GM China will be in charge of developing the next-generation Cadillac XT5 for the Chinese market. According to GM Authority sources, the next-gen crossover will be “home roomed” in China, which essentially means that GM’s Chinese operations will take responsibility for the crossover’s design and development. Now, GM Authority has learned that the up-and-coming Cadillac XT5 is currently under consideration for the North American market as well.

GM Authority spy photographers have captured the next-gen Cadillac XT5 testing as a camouflaged prototype on several occasions, including in the middle of white-out blizzard conditions, as well as on public roads. Despite the camo, a few interesting feature highlights have been spotted thus far, including vertical lighting features around the front fascia and a new mesh design for the grille, both of which appear to bear some resemblance to the styling presented by the recently refreshed 2024 Cadillac XT4. Prototype models have also shown some interesting new wheel designs.

Inside, the next-gen Cadillac XT5 will be completely overhauled with a new digital display mounted on top of the dash. The GM C1-2 platform will provide the underpinnings.

  1. Hopefully this happens. It would be an indicator that gm management has returned to ideas rooted in reality, and not far-fetched fever dreams.

  2. Makes sense. 2030 is still 6 years away and it seems illogical to not introduce another generation of their best selling crossover. I hope they do along with 2nd gen XT4 and XT6.

  3. Definitely makes sense. Lincoln is bringing the Nautilus back, it’s only right for Cadillac to offer a new XT5

    1. GM quitting a profitable segment is insanity! No one sees Lexus or BMW leaving ICE early. Selling the vehicle will cost GM US little as outta design is Chinese, like Envision, and it will essentially be a reskinned vehicle.
I am not a fan of Chinese imports but, since GM sells many vehicles there, one production line will be more profitable than two.
Send CT6 while you’re at it, GM!

      1. No more Chinese made crap. If tge can charge $60k for this, it can be built here.

  4. Make it happen. Bring the CT6 too.

  5. Cool, do it.

  6. Will it be made here or will it be imported from China? Because nothing says prestige like “Chinese Cadillac”

    1. I know what you mean MrR, they forget that the US isn’t wanting what the Chinese market has we want our own models that are potent and superior. The XT5 for the US needs to be placed on a shortened version of the Tahoe/Yukon platform and directed squarely at models like the Range Rover Velar, Jeep Cherokee Summit, etc.

    2. This is my fear. Look at what Lincoln is doing. The two smallest in their lineup are imported from China and they coincided with their redesign.

  7. Quite possibly the most solid business move thus far(Let’s review my comment 1yr from now if it does happen and see if it aged well)
With the drop off the cliff demand with EVs(after investing Billions with a “B”) GMs shareholders are forcing Mark & Mary to make the hard choice and save face by not admitting that the EV push was too soon.

I speculate that they’re not going to introduce any new ICE models, so a way to skirt around that is to carry over the nameplate. My question is, will they use the Hybrid tech found in the South American & Chinese variants to meet CARB restrictions or carry over the same motors(ie 2.0L & 3.6L).

It would be wonderful if they could somehow make a transverse-axled version of the LF4 in the XT5 and turn it into a V(they did for the XTS, I don’t see why they can’t for the XT5)

    1. They’re finally making some sense here. Jumping to full EV’s made no sense. The timeline is 2030, we’re still in 2023 thats 6 years away. We should get a refreshed XT6 and a new XT5 that will probably both resemble the refreshed XT4. There is also an article in the Detroit free press that GM is now considering Hybrid variants. GM should add atleast 3 hybrid powertrains. What do you all think?

      1. Agree!

    2. Hybrid XT5 would be the way to go imo. Corvette can do it, why not Cadillac? I won’t purchase an EV Cadillac, but would sign up today for a hybrid Caddy?

  8. The all-electric future strategy is proving to be very risky. Need to keep ICE products fresh for a few more generations.

    1. They are coming to their senses and not letting the government decide what’s their best route, instead people are being vocal with their wallets. Without a true infrastructure to support this electric BS and the cost of owning one for the average consumer it wasn’t feasible.

Make a performance hybrid on a RWD based platform for US, so we have a distinct model from China that way we aren’t tied to their products and they can produce it in North America.

  9. So if they’re going to do it for the XT5 how about GM gets real and makes the CT6 second gen available to sedan buyers in the US. It was tested here and could easily find a manufacturing path.

  10. I have a 2018 XT5 that my wife and I really enjoy, V6 engine. We will be ready to purchase another one in a couple of years. Hope it happens.

  11. Finally,a wise decision

  12. I’ll buy another one when its time, but only if they keep building them in Tennessee or USA

  13. As I have said before, why China. The xt5 is great suv and I love mine and hopefully they will make and updated model so we can buy it here.It would be a very smart business decision!!!!

  14. Should have been a no-brainer decision to begin with except it didn’t fit with their stated EV mantra.

Now that it’s become apparent that EV adoption will be a lot slower than the gm brain trust crowed about they’re scrambling to find ICE and now Hybrid products to offer.

gm strategic planning: ready, fire, aim.

  15. Finally some logical news.
    Not everyone wants an EV.
    Bring it on.

  16. As much as I hope this comes to pass, I am afraid that it will be a half-@$$ed effort to buy time until they can fix the Lyric. It will probably lose the V6 which is one of the reasons I bought my XT5. At least it should get Supercruise and some other tech.

    1. While they are at it use the new2.5 turbo. Its more powerful in HP AND Torque.

  17. And we also need facelifted XT6

  18. We have a 2020 XT5 with the platinum package and a 2023 XT5 with the sport AWD and both are excellent vehicles. Continue with this terrific model and stop trying to shove this EV stuff down our throats just because this knucklehead in the White House says so. Do a refresh, keep the V6 and continue to build it in Tennessee. This is what WE want. The Cadillac custom knows best !

  19. I bought a new 2017 XT5. Had been planning to buy a 2025 XT5 since 2021.
If only a EV is available in 2025, I will buy a different mid size SUV and it won’t be a Cadillac.

  20. I hope this becomes reality or my 2023 XT5 will be my last GM vehicle after almost 60 years.I will be the last one to buy an elecric vehicle

  21. Maybe GM is wising up. Love the XT5 we have but have been renting Audi, BMW, and others to determine our next move in expecting it to go away. For us, others have fallen short so far.

GM! We have been loyal and have not found something else that we prefer. We appreciate your styling, design criteria, reliability, amenity packages. Don’t disappoint us and force us to leave.

  22. I have an XT5 and a Lyriq and folks, you’re letting your reactionary politics get in the way of your sense. Lyriq all the way. Charging at home every night and driving the Lyriq has made me wish I had enough money to replace the XT5 as well.

  24. I have a 2018 XT5 and love it. I will be ready for a new car in two years would like it to be a XT5. I would never buy an electric car. Wish they would seek suggestions from women on what they need in the interior.

  25. Hopefully they keep it. My mom has a 17, she’s not ready to replace just yet, but claims it’s “the best car she’s ever had”. Told her they wouldn’t build it after 24 and she thought about going to Lincoln or Lexus.

They’d be smart to offer a hybrid option. I’m not a fan of Toyota, but they had the smartest strategy the whole time with the hybrid options.

Please bring the 2025 refresh to North America and please include the V6 as an option. It is a fantastic engine and was recently rated as one of the top ten engines of all time.

  28. I have had 3 XT5s with the V6 and I love them but my present one has been in the shop four months for a problem with the auto braking system locking up in reverse at times. They finally got a new module and gave it back to me but it still locking up. so it is back in the shop waiting on an engineer from the factory. My dealer haas been great with loaners, I am on my fifth new loaner, when they get 3,000 millers they give me another car.

  29. Caddilac moving its vehicles to all electric would kill them not every one wants electric vehicles I own 3 at the moment cts, cts4,xt5 awd and gmc and Chevy work trucks adding a electric isn’t a plan been a Chevy guy my whole life worked at gm 10 years but if electric is my only choice I would have to see what was available out there even from private owners cause if I was gonna spend luxury money on something it would be something I wanted I can’t be the only person forcing person to buy something they don’t really want seems like bad business

  30. I hope there is and it is made in the USA NOT china ,,or I will not be replacing my 2021 Cadillac XT5 with another XT5 ..

  31. If the redesigned version is available AND it’s not imported from China, I will absolutely buy it (for the wife). This luxury crossover segment has become a mess with the over zealous push to electric. So many models desperately need updates but the carmakers (with the exception of the Germans) are focusing on electric or just canceling them all together.
