Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Trax sales during the third quarter of 2023 gave the Bow Tie’s subcompact crossover its best showing ever when ranked by sales volume, catapulting it to second place in a very crowded mainstream subcompact crossover segment, which is now comprised of 23 entries. The Subaru Crosstrek remained at the top spot from last quarter with a 15 percent slide in sales to 38,502 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) moved up three spots to second place with a 499 percent leap to 37,869 units and within 633 deliveries of first. The Honda HR-V followed in third with a 70 percent bump to 33,124 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and the second segment entry from Chevy, fell to fourth with a 76 percent jump to 30,671 units, while the Mazda CX-30 placed fifth with a 33 percent swell to 20,775 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, Buick currently fields three entries. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, moved up to eighth place with a 104 percent jump to 20,060 units. The all-new Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s platform mate, placed 17th with 5,385 deliveries. Buick’s new entry-level compact joins this list, having just gone on sale over the summer as an indirect replacement for the discontinued Buick Encore. Consequently, the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales) fell to 20th place with an 80 percent drop to 701 units.
Another entry we’ve added to this report for the first time is the all-new 2023 Dodge Hornet, which was revealed as a Chevy Trailblazer rival last year. It arrives as the fourth entry in this segment for Stellantis (when counting the discontinued Fiat 500X). Having gone on sale earlier this year, the Hornet is not making much of an impact, recording just 1,753 deliveries this quarter.

From a segment share standpoint, the Trax earned an 11 percent segment share, up a segment-best eight percentage points year-over-year. The Crosstrek also posted an 11 percent segment share, down a segment-worst seven percentage points. The HR-V held a 10 percent share, up two percentage points, while the Trailblazer earned a nine percent share, up two percentage points, while the CX-30 maintained a six percent share. The three other GM models in this space fared as follows:
- Encore GX earned a six percent share, up two percentage points
- Envista posted a two percent share
- (The discontinued) Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point
The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 94,686 deliveries. That was good for a 28 percent segment share, commanding more than a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly place The General at the top of the charts.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 23 entries, though three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:
- GM – 28 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
- Hyundai-Kia
- 20 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
- 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
- Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
- Honda – 10 percent share, one model
- Stellantis – nine percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
- Mazda – six percent share, one model
- Nissan – six percent share, one model
- VW – five percent share, one model
- Toyota – four percent share, two models
- Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
- Ford – zero percent share, one discontinue model
While fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from holding their own.
Regardless, GM commanded first place, further ahead of Hyundai-Kia this quarter.
The mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a solid 35 percent to 335,371 units during Q3 2023, meaning Trax sales significantly outperformed the segment average.
The GM Authority Take
Explosive sales of the Chevy Trax took the trajectory vertical this time with a near 500 percent leap, enabling it to knock on the door of the Subaru Crosstek as the two all-new models battle it out in the very crowded mainstream subcompact crossover segment. Even more ironic is that the Crosstek is aimed at the Chevy Trailblazer, both of which offer all-wheel-drive, while the Trax doesn’t. Additionally, Trax is helping GM distance itself from the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate in this space in terms of cumulative sales volume. Prior to launch, GM and Hyundai-Kia sales were very similar in this space.
We cannot heap enough praise on the all-new, next-generation 2024 Trax that replaced a dated and dowdy model with a true winner – a rare feat in the automotive space. In fact, the Chevy Trax remained the brand’s fastest turning model in July, and again in August. In September, GM celebrated the successful start of production of the 2024 Chevy Trax in Korea. The 2024 Trax has quickly become the most strategic vehicle GM builds in South Korea due to its high level of acceptance among customers from North America and the Asian country’s home market.
It’s also worth noting that, thanks to the 2024 Trax, GM had its best-ever quarter for subcompact sales.
Even more amazing is that the new Chevy Trax went on sale this past April, having been available for just half a year. As the lowest-cost model sold by GM, the Trax starts at just $21,495, including the $1,095 destination freight charge (DFC), and its average transaction price (ATP) was just under $24,500 in Q2 2023.
Chevy’s new entry-level crossover is on track to exceed all sales expectations and just might jump to the top of the segment next quarter to finish out the year. Incidentally, unlike some other models in its stable, GM is building enough of this hot new model, in big part thanks to the automaker opening a dedicated assembly plant just for the 2024 Trax.
About Chevy Trax
GM debuted the next-generation 2024 Chevy Trax over a year ago as the Bow Tie’s new entry-level crossover.
On the outside, the 2024 Chevy Trax incorporates the Bow Tie brand’s latest design language for internal combustion-powered models, taking after the Chevy Blazer crossover. The all-new Trax is longer, lower, and wider than the preceding model. Up front is a set of LED headlamps, configured within a dual-level cluster. Five trim levels are on offer – LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ; each include their own unique styling bits, from wheels to grille treatments.
Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Trax offers a new Blackout Package and new roof rack cross rails.
Inside, the new 2024 Trax is roomier than the preceding model, and offers more safety features and tech, including a standard eight-inch diagonal infotainment screen on LS and 1RS trims, while higher-end LT, 2RS, and Activ trims get an 11-inch screen. Further onboard tech includes Active Noise Cancelation and cruise control, while Adaptive Cruise Control is offered on most trims.
Improvements to the 2024 Chevy Trax’s turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine help bring total output to 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. It is the same powerplant found in the Chevy Trailblazer in LS and LT trim levels. Additionally, the 2024 Trax boasts improved fuel economy over the previous-generation 2022 Chevy Trax.
Only front-wheel-drive is available while the outgoing Trax offered an all-wheel-drive option. Those who would like AWD will need to move up to the aforementioned Trailblazer.
The 2024 Chevy Trax is one of 10 GM models among North American Car of the Year candidates, competing with six of those in the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category.
In case you missed it, GM Authority Executive Editor Alex Luft was quite impressed with this legitimately good model that drives as good as it looks. He described the all-new 2024 Trax as “the Corvette of its segment,” particularly when it comes to handling prowess. Check out the video below:

Trax Q3 about 38K and YTD 65K and you see it being advertised in nearly every TV commercial.
Malibu Q3 about 33K and YTD 111K and I’ve not seen one single TV commercial for it. Not in years.
I put those numbers up because I’m sure many on here will say what a great job the new Trax is doing and rightly so. And I know others have spoken highly of the Malibu’s sales both last year and this year. And yet I wonder just how much better the Malibu would be doing if it was actually advertised, stocked and promoted.
Malibu is supposedly getting a total redo for ’25.
Both the Malibu and Trax are a significant value proposition. In the new reality of average new car sale prices topping $47K, there will be an extreme hunger for ANY affordable vehicle. Even a gussied up Korean 3-Cyl import or ancient uncompetitive sedan.
Lol, not sure how you can call the Malibu uncompetitive with those sales numbers??? Plus, your term “ancient” means lower tech, lower price, and fewer problems, but wait I’m sure that will get screwed up with an unnecessary “refresh” or Mary will axe it.
Carl: Agree on that. After having owned a 2021 Malibu, I have a very fond way of looking at that car now. It’s not the most modern, but it’s as modern as needed. It’s not the fanciest, but does what it needs to do well. It get fantastic MPG if driven nicely and (I feel) has enough power to do the job well. Just an overall great car. But the important part is the pricing that although still a little high in my eyes, it’s a fair bargain in todays crazy car priced market.
Agree 100%!
It works very nice if gm sourced some of their best selling vehicles like these in the US for a change instead of the slow selling EVs nobody wants.
Goes to illustrate that gm, if motivated, can still produce a GM product. So far, my ’24 Trax Activ is awesome, if I could actually get the floor liner package as stated on the Monroney label, it would be totally rad. Apparently, packages listed as “dealer installed” are shipped separately from the vehicle itself. Been that way for years, I know, but it’s kind of concerning to be using paper mats with bad weather coming in. I WANT MY FLOOR LINERS, MARY! But thanks for a homerun vehicle!
I know you bought a cheap car. don’t be cheap yourself and buy inexpensive carpet mats.
Funny thing is, I ordered the gm accessory fitted cargo liner on Saturday, and I got a call from the dealership yesterday that it is in already! Makes me wonder if I ask the parts girl to fool the system and order the floor liner set, it might come in pretty quick, instead of waiting on the set assigned to my VIN.
Well, my floor liner pkg came in yesterday, and I picked it up in their sales department after work. They were definitely worth the wait. Perfect, tight fit at all sides. Now if I needed to muck the stalls, I could, without worry. AND… so far on this tank I am averaging 34.2 MPG, with 800 miles on the odo. Lovin’ it so far!
Great. But what’s bizarre is that I’ve yet to see one in person. Seems like GM is focusing mostly on the West Coast. I HAVE seen an Envista, strangely.
I see them all over WNY.
Saw one on may to work this morning for the first time. First thought was “what the heck is that?” High belt line and low roof line with a wide stance. Looked weird to me. Lots of sharp angles makes it appear boxy.
NYC suburbs I saw 2 Trax and finally 1 Envista.
Beachy: Maybe you are seeing them but just don’t realize it. After all, it looks very similar to the Trailblazer. Heck, they all look the same to me.
Quite a few here in Chicago too. They look similar to Trailblazer, but in my opinion, actually look WAY better (and larger). IF it had a better engine/trans combo, I’d buy one.
I see a lot down here in South Florida. We’re in the market now so will have the wife check one out. She’s also considering the Buick Encore GX, the Hyundai Kona and the Kia Seltos. Have no clue what she’ll do but she could even get another Audi A3 but with all the issues it’s been having, doubtful she’ll do that a second time. But have learned to never say never in life! She’s so familiar with her 2015 A3, she might just go for the 2023 model as there have been a few changes to the interior we both like. but since it has a poor reliability record, think she’ll go with a CUV this time around. I know I plan on either the 2024 Hyundai Kona or the Mini Cooper Countryman in the next year or two.
Curious to see the long term durability and reliabilty of these tiny 1.2 liter engines.
Aluminum blocks, CVT transmission… Spoiler alert, the durability won’t be great. They are interesting little motors with some good tech, like an electric turbo wastegate and electric water pump… I do wish gm would have a optional 4 cylinder in some midsize-subcompact offering… Kinda pathetic they don’t.
2024 Trax has a conventional 6 speed automatic, not a CVT. If it had a CVT, I would not have bought one. I had a 2012 Patriot, and the CVT was a droning nightmare. I really liked the rest of that little Jeep. The CVT alone made me get rid of it.
So many people bought into the low price and good looks forgot about the small underpowered engine, give it time they will have regrets when they want to haul four or five adults and some heavy things in the back, it a good one person car around town .
Yes, the small engine did give me concern. Both our vehicles have a 1.8T engine and they’re fine for every driving situation but anything smaller then a 1.4 would give me concern. Tried a Buick Encore with the 1.3T engine and was underwhelmed honestly…so much so, I didn’t even consider it anymore. Last summer, did almost buy a Bolt but when the time came to put the deposit down & sign the paperwork, decided to wait. I don’t think we’re quite ready for EV overall, so have pulled back from the idea of getting one. Do know someone who had a Nissan Leaf and now a Chevy Bolt and raves about it. So much so, he keeps on pushing us in that direction. It could work for me, as my commute is under 7 miles both ways. But still, just not sure if I want to go in that direction.
Sandy G: Having my last car as a Malibu and a few years ago (2015) had a Spark EV with very little range (86), I had zero issues going to my Bolt. I’ve had it almost a year and just under 12K and so far it’s been perfect. I do drive rather easy going, so my range is always over 310 if charging to 100% and around 295 +/- if charging to 95%. My running average is 4.7 miles per KWH which translates to 189 MPG. It’s fast, quiet, fun, rides well and I’d highly recommend it.
The best bargain, and honestly only car that can be found in gm’s lineup rn worth buying for <$40k, is the ct4.
All this even with no AWD… cool.
I bought the 2024 Trax and it looks good and design. But engine don’t have enough power. I like travel and wouldn’t drive the Trax far distance. It feels like lawn mower engine. Really got hit gas get good performance for turbo engine. In process of getting rid of it for something with better motor.
GM caught everyone with their pants down! Great Job Mary!
Did you not test drive it before you bought it? If so, then the engine didn’t get less powerful the day after you bought it.
I bought a 2024 Chevy Trax Activ. The motor does not feel underpowered. If you’re one of those people that think the Trax is a C8 Corvette. Then please look at some other vehicle. Nothing in the market has this much; “bang for the buck”. And by the way. I own a C8 Corvette also.
Now all it needs is a manual transmission to make it exciting!
