This 2024 Chevy Trax Bandit Outlaw Edition Could Be Yours

If you love Smokey and the Bandit, but prefer a small crossover to a 1977 Pontiac Firebird, then this custom 2024 Chevy Trax is for you. Taking inspiration from the classic Burt Reynolds film, this one-of-one Trax is instantly recognizable, and sure to get plenty of attention on the street. Now, it’s headed to auction.

For those readers who may not know, the 1977 Pontiac Firebird was made into an icon thanks to Reynolds’ classic film Smokey and the Bandit, in which Reynolds plays Bo “The Bandit” Darville, a daredevil driver who wheels the Firebird as a “blocker” to draw attention away from a truck carrying an illegal load of beer across state lines.

As such, this 2024 Chevy Trax is outfitted with a wealth of decals that give a hat tip to the hero car from the film. Finished in black, the decals present a classic orange/gold finish, and include the “Screaming Chicken” on the hood, plus a hood power bulge with the word “Turbo” painted on it. There’s also “Outlaw” and “Bandit” added on various body panels, while the wheels appear to be customized 17-inch units.

The cabin features an 8-inch Chevrolet infotainment system, as well as heated bucket seats and a remote start feature. Looking at the feature list and seat upholstery, the Trax Bandit is likely based on the entry-level LS upgraded with the (ZFT) LS Convenience Package, which is currently listed $22,490 for the 2024 model year.

Making the go is the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine, which is rated at 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 rpm. Output is routed exclusively to the front wheels through the GM six-speed automatic transmission. Under the body panels, the 2024 Chevy Trax rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set.

According to the listing, this Bandit-style Chevy Trax has a mere 146 miles on the clock. Now, it’s set to go under the hammer as Lot F104 at the Mecum Auctions event in Las Vegas, scheduled to get underway Thursday, November 9th at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The custom Trax will be offered at no reserve.

  6. No no no! Stop this! This is madness. The Trax is just the Trax, it doesn’t deserve the Pontiac Firebird graphics. An insipid sight.

    1. Well, it’s just an aesthetic package, and a pretty good idea, but they should’ve tuned it up. It likely can’t fit an LS under there, but they could give it bigger turbos and free flowing exhaust, and I bet they can get that thing a good 170 h, and maybe a little suspension lowering. It’s a small subcompact SUV, effectively a lifted hatch, so they could easily make this a lifted hot hatch/rally vehicle, and it would be a blast.

  17. The wheels before the customization look like they came from the 2RS trim line. I’m guessing I’ll be the only commenter who likes this vehicle. All the naysayers must have forgotten about most of the 1970s to the 1990s so called performance cars were just sporty looking exterior décor packaging. Remember the Gremlin X and the Pacer X and even the 70’s Firebird Trans Am themselves without the super duty 455 engine? This Trax is a similar concept. It looks nice.

    1. joseph p: I understand where you are coming from, but can’t agree with you. To me, doing this to a box CUV is just wrong. It would be like taking my teen heart throb (Farrah Fawcett, may she rest in peace) who would be nearly 77 years old now if still alive, taking a pic of her while putting her in a skimpy bikini and pinning her on my wall. It just wouldn’t be the same.

This “TA” thing would be the same thing. It just doesn’t work.

    2. Pretty sure that is the 17″ LT wheel painted black and gold, the grille gives it away as an LT as well.

I am of a certain age where the black and gold trim packages bring back memories, I loved them back in the day. For this Trax, I think if the hood scoop, screaming chicken and the logos were removed, it would look awesome. Just a black Trax with that wheel/tire, gold-trimmed grille and the gold pinstriping. The Z slash in the pinstripe at the rear door is a decent solution to the modern problem of random body lines on new vehicles.

    3. Could not agree more with you. We just took delivery of a new Trax 1RS in cacti green.
Its an amazing vehicle, very quiet and comfortable both around town and on the highway
The 1.2 turbo is completely adequate, especially with the 6 speed.
I think this black Trax is very cool, and while I remember the Smokey and the Bandit movies of 1979-80, most of todays buyers of the new 2024 Trax were likely not born yet or were in huggies so they would not remember the Firebird TAs
All of the nay sayers on here about the new Trax have not driven the car, it is fantastic and could sell for many thousands more and still be a great value.
Chevy has a huge hit on their hands , the build quality , fit and finish are first class , better than many of the GM vehicles screwed together by the UAW
The car looks and drives like the winner it is !!

    1. I understand where you’re coming from. Notice how the auto industry only uses liters instead of cubic inches in describing the measurements of their engines? The bigger Equinox has a 1.5 liter or a 91 cubic inch engine. That’s not much bigger than the Trax. Bigger crossovers like the Ford Escape and the Nissan Rogue also have 3 cylinder engines. I like cars. But they are mainly transportation. This Trax looks nice to me. There are younger generations of people that have no idea what a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird is. This décor package would spark interest for a new generation. That’s all I’m saying.

Secondly, this is hideous, and to put the screaming chicken on something so grossly underpowered, is an insult to everyone ever involved with Smokey and the Bandit.
