Refreshed 2025 Ram TRX To Get Six-Cylinder Engine: Video

The Ram TRX is expected to receive a thorough rework for the 2025 model year, with new styling and a new engine. For the moment, all signs point to the upcoming 2025 Ram TRX ditching the supercharged 6.2L V8 cradled by the current model in favor of a twin-turbo six-cylinder. Now, new video has surfaced that seems to reinforce this expectation.

A prototype of the upcoming 2025 Ram TRX.

The new video is brief, clocking in at under a minute. The video shows a Ram TRX prototype testing on public streets, covered in swirling black-and-white camouflage. The video is captured from an adjacent vehicle, which follows the pickup as it drives down the road. Towards the latter half of the video, we see the prototype make a lefthand turn, at which point the Ram driver buries the throttle. We hear what clearly sounds like a turbocharged inline six engine as the pickup accelerates, the exhaust popping and banging between the shifts.

As for the powerplant that’s making all those noises, it’s likely the 2025 Ram TRX will be equipped with the twin-turbocharged 3.0L I6 Hurricane HO engine introduced in March of 2022. HO, as you may have guessed, stands for High Output, with this particular configuration rated at more than 500 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, but given the current Ram TRX produces 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque thanks to its supercharged 6.2L Hemi V8, the twin-turbo ‘six in the 2025 Ram TRX will likely produce well over the 500-pony mark.

For reference, the twin-turbocharged 3.0L I6 Hurricane SO (Standard Output) engine is rated at  420 horsepower and 468 pound-feet of torque. The Hurricane engine family is currently available in the Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and is expected to added elsewhere in the Stellantis product portfolio as a replacement for the automaker’s V8 engines.

It also bears mentioning that the Ford F-150 Raptor is also equipped with a twin-turbo six-cylinder, specifically a 3.5L unit producing 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, although the Ram TRX is actually a direct rival for the F-150 Raptor R, which is equipped with a supercharged 5.2L V8 producing 700 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque.

Meanwhile, GMC doesn’t have any direct rival for the Ram TRX, and that isn’t expected to change anytime soon, per comments from GMC executive Duncan Aldred.

  1. That 6 cylinder sounds TERRIBLE!

    1. Agreed.

You will never get a 6 cylinder to sound like a V8. As the owner of both a 5th Gen Camaro SS and C7 GS that are modified with bolt-ons and more, it is quite clear. Several members in my car clubs have modified 6 cylinders and the sound is not there, no matter what they do. I would never tell them that their 6’s sound bad; therefore, if they are happy, I am happy for them.

  2. It’s not a V6. It’s an inline 6.

    1. True, but it still sounds awful and is an inferior replacement for a proper V-8, in my opinion.

  3. No 700hp=less sales

    1. To be fair not many people can afford a TRX anyways.

  4. The Hurricane INLINE 6 has been in the news for a couple of years now, before and during regular production, yet the author of this article incorrectly repeats several times “V6”. What a joke.

  5. You can tune a six to sound much different. The question is will they take the time and money to do so.

My 2.8 V6 in My Fiero get mistaken for a SBC all the time Pontiac tried to get a V8 at idle.

    1. The 2.8 and the 3.1 were great sounding V6 engines (for a 6 cylinder)
Especially with the Cowl Induction on the Cavalier
Cool engine considering what was available back then.

  6. The Hurricane Inline 6 platform has variants in the pipeline for the Mopar Direct Connection program, the HurriCrate CAT X engine. Mopar is targeting mid 1000hp, so a Hurricane for the TRX making over 702hp that the Hellcat engine it has now is entirely possible.

    1. The HP isn’t the point, having the option for a V8 is. Also, I give them a 0.1% chance of putting the 1,000HP version in the truck.

  7. One word, stupidity.

    1. Agreed. Bragging rights that few mainstream vehicle purchasers care about at all. Just another case of “little P syndrome” on wheels, no matter which manufacturer builds them.

Extreme horsepower vehicles from any manufacturer, are completely unnecessary for the street, when 99% of daily driving is done.

Torque, not horsepower does the work. Off-roaders rock crawl and high horsepower desert racers are not converted street trucks. Vehicles like these don’t fit daily life and are hard to live with in that role.

Such vehicles also tend to capture niche market numbers, have abbreviated model runs compared to more mainstream models and parts support is less than friendly over the life of the vehicle.

It is frequently something that the “weekend warrior” (bench racer) with a string of other vehicles has to have as a conversation piece.

  8. I wonder if they will even lower the price on the upcoming TRX compared to the V8 once, tho the fuel economy with a twin turbo Inline six would be interesting.

  9. At least its not a dumb a** four cylinder like GM puts in their full size trucks.

  10. It sounds wimpy! No thank you

  11. Let’s be reasonable, the TRX is a toy not a workhorse. A TRX customer is looking for the most over the top vehicle. The first year this is released, v8 fans WILL buy from another manufacturer. If the inline 6 performs it may acquire a following. The last time I was looking for a truck we picked Dodge because of the 5.7. Chevy will offer a V8 in 2025, know where to invest. 😂
