As a reminder, the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG gasoline engine and the GM nine-speed automatic transmission were deleted from the Chevy Malibu powerplant choices when the range-topping Premier trim was repackaged as the 2LT trim level. The sole remaining engine choice is the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine developing 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, with a continuously variable automatic on board to handle cog swaps.
As GM Authority exclusively reported at the end of 2022, The General is planning to launch another generation of the last Chevy sedan, starting with the upcoming 2025 Chevy Malibu. The new model will be underpinned by the larger D/E variant of the GM VSS-F platform. GM is also working on a new non-crossover, D-segment EV which will probably also have a sedan body style and be sold exclusively in China.
Both the current 2024 Chevy Malibu and the upcoming tenth-generation model will be produced at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas. Production of the next-gen Malibu may start as early as 2025, and run through the 2031 calendar year, though this schedule is tentative and subject to change.

I would seriously consider a Malibu if they still offered a sporty LTZ package. But no, it comes with a tiny engine, a snowmobile transmission, and no sporty styling.
We had a Malibu rental for a week. Three drivers and we all hated the front seats. After several hours on the road our backs ached like hell. Decent car but the transmission was poor and too noisy. It needs addressing with the next model.
With many players vacating like Chrysler 200, Ford Fusion, Mazda 6, VW Passat, the remaining players are trying to capture that market and survive. Even Nissan Altima may end in 2025.
So let’s just leave everything except SUVs wide open for foreign manufacturing. Great idea! Make it the way it should be and people will follow it with an aftermarket behind it as well. BTW SUVs cost a lot more to insure especially if you have kids
I was considering a Malibu for my wife, BUT… I do NOT want a turbocharged 4 cyl engine… and the only wheel that is decent is the 16″ ones.. that no one makes tires for any longer! Did every MANAGER at General Motors lose their brains???
i rather see this car get revived by kia or hyundai and take a different turn because nothing is getting better with this car
Malibu has so much potential. Had one on rental that was okay but test drove a 2020 and it was 1)under-powered, 2)car slightly lurches due to CVT. Thought this was start/stop but problem continues with system off. My uber driver had a 2016 Malibu and that sensation was even more pronounced. Also, interior is hideous with fabric dash and doors.
GM can build great cars like Impala and G8/SS/Commodore yet can’t transfer this technology to Malibu. GM should have killed Malibu and sold Impala as midsized with new trims
Bring back the 2.0 litre and build a hybrid.
