GMC Brand Running At 63 Days Supply In September 2023

Since the 2023 calendar year was rung in, vehicle inventory levels across the United States have been steadily rising as the effects of supply chain-related constraints are remedied. However, the UAW has implemented widespread strikes on the Big Three in an attempt to gain leverage for more favorable labor contracts. As such, brands like GMC could see a notable drop in its days supply figures as the strikes continues.

As of September 2023, GMC was running at a 63 days supply. In comparison, a 60 days supply is considered optimal across the automotive industry. However, this strong inventory level may not last forever.

As of the time of this writing, there are no outwardly signs that the UAW strikes are currently taking place, as Cox Automotive noted that the impacts have thus far been quite muted. Nonetheless, the UAW expanded strikes against General Motors and Ford in late September 2023, so a ripple effect might be noticeable sometime in October 2023.

It’s worth noting that there are currently strikes at GM plants that produce Big Red vehicles, including the Canyon and Savana.

Looking forward, it’s uncertain exactly how the strikes will play out. As the Big Three continue to bargain with the UAW, the union may decide to lessen its strikes if it receives what it perceives as good progress in negotiations, similar to how Stellantis was spared from the recent strike expansions. Notably, the UAW has yet to target full-size truck and SUV production, the automakers’ most profitable vehicles.

In regard to GMC specifically, both the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri and the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan – the latter of which is currently slated to produce the upcoming 2024 Acadia – are experiencing a strike. From there, the union may decide to target the GM Arlington plant in Texas where the GMC Yukon is built, which it was planning on doing last week before GM offered to include the Ultium Cells battery plants in the national worker agreement. The Arlington plant is considered the most profitable auto plant in the world.

  1. Sure there is.

  2. The pipeline of sold orders is thinning out. Down about 85% from this time last year. Going forward, GM should have one standard sold order process but that will never happen. They can’t pick winners and losers with one standard process. That would force them to be fair with all dealers. In my opinion palms are getting greased somewhere in the chain.
