GM is detailing its latest contract proposal to the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union amid ongoing strikes at multiple GM facilities. The new proposal includes a 23-percent general wage increase, reinstatement of cost of living allowance (COLA), cuts to the time to reach max wages, improved retirement security, and more. The UAW announced its initial strike targets on September 15th, and have expanded the strike to include additional facilities on several occasions since.
Highlights of General Motors’ latest contract proposal to the UAW were posted to a GM website dedicated to providing updates on the ongoing negotiations between the union and automaker.
For most employees, the new offer includes:
- 25 percent general wage increase representing a 25 percent compound wage increase over the life of the the agreement, up to $40.39 per hour in base wages, including a 10 percent increase the first year
- Reinstatement of COLA for seniority team members starting the first year
- Ratification bonus for all team members
- $0 premiums, $0 deductibles for healthcare for seniority team members
- Up to five weeks vacation, Juneteenth, and two weeks of paid parental leave
Meanwhile, temporary and in-progression employees will receive:
- Faster path to max wages
- All active full-time temps with one year of employment converted to seniority at ratification
- Temp team member wages increased 26 percent to $21 per hour
- Profit sharing availability for team members who have worked at least 1,000 hours
The agreement also includes retirement security improvements, such as:

- Company contributions for healthcare in retirement increased by 25 percent to $1.25 per hour worked
- Increase to Basic Benefit Rate for pension plan by 5 percent for future service
Just yesterday, the Executive Vice President, GM Global Manufacturing and Sustainability, Gerald Johnson posted a video outlining the latest updates in the UAW negotiations, stating that General Motors believes it has met its commitment to provide the UAW with an historic wage improvement. A recent poll indicates that a majority of Americans find the latest General Motors contract offer to be a fair deal.
The UAW declined to expand the strike last week, but did indicate that it was switching the strike strategy. UAW President Shawn Fain is expected to address the latest developments in negotiations this afternoon.

They keep caving while the UAW offers no counter-proposals. I don’t get it.
what dont you get? i said before the strike started record profits and msrp padding dealer fees means they will bend before uaw. thats a given. when you boast how much you are making, remain complicit with dealers charging 20k “market fees” and not honoring customer orders cause of “options constraints”, and then come around and say you dont have money to pay the people who build your boxes. not to mention the board voted to increase their pay right before.
they placed themselves in this position and now they have to deal with it. 2024 aint looking too good as it is. nothing new, bad banking situation, people out of money, 2025 big model changes coming. they need to resolve this completely before march of next year at worst if they want 2025 to not go like 2024. they have no time.
i think uaw is going to accept 27% or maybe 30% depending. 23 i doubt. we will see.
If you are stupid and gullible enough to pay a dealer markup, you deserve what you get
i agree yet people are paying them. and even going above… corvettes z06, broncos (esp when they first came out) etc. people are literally walking in and screaming i got money i want that car i dont care.
as a car guy buying 2-3 project/fun cars a year i have stopped completely due to nothing being available or what i find being stupid priced. the only cars i bought in the past 4 years are brand new chevys at msrp because that was literally the best deal i could find. its madness and now seems the new normal
But the gotta-have’s gotta have. First on the block, or something…
I think what they really want I’ve not seen yet. They want the battery workers to be treated like an autoworker. I thought F and S had given on that, not sure. Reality is the battery is like the old engine assy. The battery is way more labor than the electric motor. In terms of total cost to produce, the battery may be more than everything else in an EV.
lol… Dealer fees don’t help GM. They only help the dealer. Very few dealers share any of their fees and markups with their staff. Dealer fees are only for the Greedy Dealer.
Pretty much some workers will get replaced by automation and some white collar workers get laid offf
Labor is going to price GM right out of the market. Less than a year ago bought a 2023 Audi A5 Premium Plus w/Black Optics package at 8%below MSRP. That ends up being around what a 2023 Canyon AT4 w/ Prem +Tech package runs. Sure, it’s not apples to apples but I had also cross shopped Cadillac CT4-5 V series (not Blackwing) Sorry, but for the money being asked, they were not competitive. Pushing mid-sized PU’s into Lux car pricing territory?
The big 3 need to make a final offer to the UAW and stick to their guns. The UAW membership will vote yes when they go broke!!!!
Daughter needed a truck to pull camper and dealers in their state could only get black on black so that’s what they got. 5000 off with family discount but still very high price, great quality however.
