GM Furloughs 48 Employees At Lockport, New York Facility

GM has stated that it has furloughed 48 employees in Lockport, New York, citing a lack of work. The recent round of layoffs is the latest ripple effect in the ongoing strike by the UAW. The union has gradually expanded its strikes against the Big Detroit Three automakers since workers first began walkouts last month.

The facility in Lockport, New York provides HVAC components to the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri. The Wentzville facility was among the UAW’s first strike targets following the expiration of the previous labor contracts on September 14th. The union also targeted Ford’s Michigan Assembly plant and the Stellantis Assembly Complex in Ohio.

The UAW’s latest targeted strike strategy, which calls on workers at certain facilities to walk out, rather than all workers at all facilities, is believed to provide union representatives with greater flexibility at the negotiation table, as well as slow the drain on the UAW strike fund. Picketing union members are given $500 a week in strike pay.

Following the initial round of strikes, the UAW expanded the strike the following week to include 38 parts distribution sites belonging to GM and Stellantis, opting not to expand the strike against Ford due to more substantial progress in contract negotiations. The UAW then expanded the strike a second time a week later, targeting the GM Lansing Delta Township plant in Michigan and Ford’s Chicago Assembly plant in Illinois, while opting not to expand the strike against Stellantis.

As a result of the UAW strikes, GM has been forced to idle production at the GM Fairfax plant, as well as furlough over 160 metal workers. The latest furloughs also include 163 workers at the Toledo Propulsion Systems plant.

It’s estimated that GM is now losing upwards of $21 million a day due to the strike, with the total amount lost estimated at $200 million so far.

  1. “Picketing union members are given $500 a week in strike pay.”

If they are on strike, why should they be getting ANY pay? No work = No pay.

I feel bad for the Lockport plant. They are about an hour away from me.

    1. The pay I believe comes from the union not the car company.
