GM Files To Trademark Dexdrive EV For Electric Drive Unit Lubricant

GM has filed to trademark the Dexdrive EV name, GM Authority has learned. The trademark will be used in conjunction with branding for the automaker’s EV drive unit lubrication.

The trademark was filed on October 2nd, 2023 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and is assigned serial number 98206794. The application carries a Goods and Services description of “Motor vehicle lubricant, namely, electric drive unit lubricant.”

GM trademark for a new EV-centric lubrication product.

The fact that GM has branded its own EV drive unit lubrication shouldn’t come as much of a surprise for those readers familiar with GM’s engine oil brand, Dexos. GM’s Dexos line of engine oils includes Dexos R, Dexos 1 (Gen 2 and Gen 3), Dexos 2, and Dexos D (diesel applications), each of which offers its own list of applications and viscosity ratings.

Now, as GM makes the transition to all-electric vehicles, it makes perfect sense for The General to offer its own line of electric drive unit lubricants as well.

GM is now aiming to drive the mass adoption of all-electric vehicles across the auto industry, with plans to launch 30 new all-electric models worldwide by 2025, including new products across the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC brands. The General also plans to fully transition its light-duty vehicle lineup to zero-emissions vehicles by 2035. To that end, the company has poured billions into new EV technology development and EV production efforts.

Chief among the company’s new EV tech are its GM Ultium battery products and GM Ultium Drive motor products. GM has also developed new all-electric platforms, such as the GM BEV3 platform, a third-generation architecture that underpins GM EVs like the Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Celestiq, Chevy Equinox EV, and Chevy Blazer EV. GM has also developed the new GM BT1 platform, which underpins models like the Chevy Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV, GMC Sierra EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ.

  2. There is no replacement interval for the drive unit oil, so this wouldn’t be for any scheduled oil change. This is more of a product for a service department than an end user
