Though it’s running well below the 60 days supply often considered optimum in the U.S. automotive market, the all-new 2024 Chevy Trax saw its inventory increase to 33 days supply as of the start of October 2023, research by Cox Automotive indicates.
The Chevy Trax was the Bow Tie’s fastest-turning model in August, with inventory standing at just six days supply according to some sources, demonstrating how quickly the affordable, compact crossover was being snapped up by customers.
The 33 days supply currently reported for the Chevy Trax in September is believed to include both in-stock and in-transit units. Thanks to its manufacture at the GM Changwon plant in South Korea, the overhauled crossover has not been affected by the UAW strikes cutting into the supply of several other highly popular GM models. Its sales reached 20,921 units in Q2 2023, a 114.5 percent surge year-over-year.
Meanwhile, other GM nameplates ran at approximately similar inventory levels in September. The Cadillac Escalade luxury SUV registered 30 days supply, as did the popular Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban SUVs. Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon inventory ran at 29 days supply in September as a UAW strike disrupted work at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri where the mid-size pickups are produced.
The lowest September inventory of any GM model was that of the Chevy Corvette, running at 23 days supply for the month. Supply chain issues were a factor of this limited inventory, with hundreds of 2023 Corvette Z06 units photographed by a drone while parked in an outdoor lot at the GM Bowling Green plant in Kentucky, awaiting carbon fiber parts before being completed and shipped.
As a whole, The General has 60 days supply at the dealerships of its four chief brands. Popular Chevy and Cadillac models are running significantly below this level. Cadillac has the lowest inventory as a brand at 46 days, while the highest supply is Buick at 82 days supply. The Buick Enclave has the biggest current inventory of any GM nameplate at 141 days supply.
Meanwhile, GM’s Big Three competitors have a more significant cushion of inventory, making the UAW strikes less risky to them than GM. The Ford brand is at 88 days supply, while Stellantis’ four most popular brands are running at between 103 days and 142 days supply.
