Chevy Blazer EV Named 2024 MotorTrend SUV Of The Year

The Chevy Blazer EV made its formal introduction for the 2024 model year, debuting an all-new midsize crossover powered by the latest GM battery electric technology. GM Authority has covered the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV at length, reporting on the EV’s specs, availability, production, and much, much more. Now, the Chevy Blazer EV has been recognized as the 2024 MotorTrend SUV of the Year.

The Chevy Blazer EV is the 2024 MotorTrend SUV of the Year.

The MotorTrend SUV, Car, and Truck of the Year awards are based on six equally weighted criteria, including Advancement in Design (exterior and interior), Efficiency, Engineering Excellence, Performance of Intended Function, Safety, and Value. With regard to exterior styling, MotorTrend praised the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV as offering a “fiery” design with real “swagger,” while highlighting the crossover’s short overhangs and long wheelbase. The publication also praised the crossover’s large infotainment screens, but found the decision not to offerApple CarPlay and Android Auto to be a strange one.

As for the engineering, the Chevy Blazer EV was praised for the flexibility of the GM Ultium architecture, which offers a variety of configurations and layouts. MotorTrend tested the Blazer EV RS AWD model, which is rated at 288 horsepower and 333 pound-feet of torque. Range per charge is estimated at 279 miles by the EPA, with an efficiency of 103 mpge in the city, 88 mpge on the highway, and 96 mpge combined. MotorTrend recorded a range of 239 miles traveling at a 70-mph average with normal accessory use.

On the safety front, the Chevy Blazer EV is offered with a range of different safety tech features, including front automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and more. Finally, with regard to value, MotorTrend says that the Chevy Blazer EV is more or less in line with competitors, currently starting at $56,715 for the 2LT AWD.

All in all, the publication says the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV fulfills is “easy to drive, easy to live with, easy to use.”

  1. Very happy to see the Blazer EV receive the award….too bad GM will blow this amazing news as they have absolutely zero clue how to mass produce Batteries at scale and BEV’s
Talk about a huge missed opportunity!!!

    1. If you paid attention GM will be at full production at their first Ultium plant by the end of the year… enough for 175K Hummer sized batteries.

The slowdown in battery production was with module fabrication and GM is working their way around that.

      1. Um NO. Read the TN plant build slowdown article you must have missed.

        1. That’s not the only Ultium Plant…. the first one in Ohio is finished and will be 100% operational before the end of the year.

      2. I’d really like GM to succeed, but they’ve been making pie in the sky proclamations about their upcoming EV’s for years now and none have been met. Delay upon delay on one product after another, Super Bowl ads for vehicles that never materialize and when they do they’re plagued with one problem after another.

So I wonder what their press release will be saying when their 1st Ultium plant isn’t able to produce batteries at the volume being predicted.

So then why has GM pushed back the Nox EV and Sierra and Non Fleet Silverado EV if they are not having Battery issues?
What reason have they provided those Reservation holders?

  3. Pretty sure this “award” goes to their biggest advertiser every year.
About as meaningful as the JD Power ” buy your award’ scheme.
Then again, if you are the type of person that actually buys this mall blazer, then you would believe this.

Explain Tesla winning the award then when they don’t advertise?

Tesla also had the Model S win the Best vehicle ever

    2. Jay: I think you confused this with Consumer Reports. haha. Oh wait, they say they don’t sell advertisements. So that would be the biggest “contributor’.

  4. MPGe is the automotive equivalent of “incandescent equivalent watts”. I wish they’d use miles per kWh instead.

    1. StevenInSoCal: I agree. I’d take things a step further and say that they need to talk about these in terms the average person can and will understand. I had to Google things and learn on my own because so few know or understand the terms, thus leaving more room for the anit-EV drivers to keep saying stuff that isn’t true or is misunderstood at best.

BTW, I just hit 4.7 miles per KWH yesterday on my Bolt EV which equates to the same as getting 188 miles per gallon with ICE. That 4.7 is over 10,045 miles.

    2. I see use in their rating methodology. My ICE vehicles are all very similar in cost/mile. That being said, my commute to work in my SRX V8 is about $15 round trip in gas @ 20mpg (Northstars aren’t known for their efficiency!)
My Bolt EUV averages under $3 to recharge for the same commute. At an EPA rating of 115MPGe, the numbers line up pretty well, reflecting the Bolt’s 5x gain in efficiency.
Obviously there are tons of variables here, but in my case, at $.11/kwh (which I believe is at or very nearly the national average), it makes sense.

  5. Good-looking SUV, but it falls flat on its face for its distance, or should I say non-distance range test. Please give me at least 400 miles per charge. Please.

  6. No Apple Car Play. No Android Auto. No sale. Add to this that it’s an EV, which most don’t want, good luck selling these paper weights.

    1. How do you know it is an EV most don’t want? Data? or just opinion.
And have you tried the new GM Play system in this vehicle?
GM has done a bad job explaining why they dropped it and an even worse job at explaining why the GM Play is better, I’ll grant you that.

      1. I didn’t mean this EV specifically. I meant in general, most people don’t want EV’s. There is plenty of data supporting that most people don’t want EV’s.

        Reply
        1. And what data would that be, as BEV sales are up 50% YTD over last year with over 300k alone sold in Q3 (a record). Currently, BEV sales represent 7.9% of the US car market – roughly equal to Honda’s market share in the US. Follow the numbers rather than narratives.

  9. I’m not an EV fan, so I have few things to say about the vehicle. But, isn’t is shocking (not) that because Motor Trend moved its HQ to LA (California being the largest EV market in the US) years ago, it now awards basically only EVs with OTY awards? Talk about being out of touch…
At least the Trax made it to Finalist and received praise. Unlike the Encore GX and Envista.

  10. This award must not have anything to do with actual sales, what have they sold about 50 of these things nationwide? I don’t mean to sound like I’m coming down on the vehicle, but with that pricing and lack of desirable features, this thing is a dud.

    Reply
    1. As far as sales, it will definitely not move the needle, but this award has nothing to do with projected success, rather the overall vehicle vs other ‘new’ offerings. So it doesn’t need to be class leading or budget friendly. This award should bring positive attention to this car and may provide a sales bump.

  12. Congratulations again for Chevy which had the 2010 Volt as the first electric vehicle winner. Read the Motor Trend article which admits that electrics are the future of personal transportation.

  13. That would not work. I drive to Detroit and back. 239 range would cut it to close and in the winter that range will be closer to 175 if that. Nice grocery getter if you don’t have to drive it on long trips.

    Reply
    1. how fast do you drive? It’s got plenty of range and a Heat Pump as standard so range loss in the winter will be substantially less than other EVs without.

  16. Good job GM and Chevy… As per the complaints about how much where sold so far the lower trim level models are not out yet… I think GM is doing right bring the EVs out slowly with hopefully less problems instead of rushing to build them just to have recalls. As for me I am waiting for the equinox EV and ice equinox.

  18. My wife’s 2019 Blazer RS is an awesome vehicle, one of the best I’ve ever had in my almost 50 years of driving (excluding my street legal drag cars), For her kind of driving I’d consider the Blazer EV except (1) needs 50% more range to be viable in Texas and (2) no Car Play means no sale. Stupid move Mary…again.

  19. Lack of Carplay and Android Auto is likely so they can sell people a monthly data plan for the vehicle.
The deal killer for me is no sunroof on the RS AWD….at $60k it better have everything. Until these issues are resolved, I’m out. I’m confident pricing will be cut, and the sunroof will be added to the RS.

    1. Cant wait for that to blow up in thier face . That’s so deaf to the customer .. we will force you pay for CarPlay monthly on top of your monthly payment
