Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Trailblazer sales during the second quarter of 2022 put the Bow Tie’s brands popular subcompact crossover in second place in a crowded segment of 21 entries when ranked by sales volume. The Subaru Crosstrek remained at the top spot from last quarter, when we added this model to the segment mix, posting a 36 percent increase in sales to 34,568 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales) stayed in second place with a solid 112 percent jump to 33,857 units, putting it within roughly 700 deliveries of first place. The Jeep Compass moved up to third with a 28 percent bump to 28,083 units, while the Honda HR-V slipped to fourth with an 11 percent slide to 27,406 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales), the Trailblazer’s corporate cousin and second entry from Chevy, moved up 10 spots to fifth with a segment-best 115 percent jump to 20,921 units. The rest of the crowded field earned less than 20K deliveries each. That includes the Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, which moved up to ninth place with a 99 percent sales increase to 18,055 units, along with the discontinued Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), the second segment entry from Buick, which remained in 18th place with a 59 percent drop to 2,085 units. Deliveries of the all-new Buick Envista didn’t commence until after the second quarter.

From a segment share standpoint, the Trailblazer earned an 11 percent share, up a segment-best five percentage points. The Crosstrek led with an 11 percent segment share, up one percentage point year-over-year. The Compass maintained a nine percent share, while the HR-V also earned a nine percent share, down a segment-worst three percentage points. The Trax posted a seven percent segment share, up three percentage points. The two other GM models in this space fared as follows:

  • Encore GX posted a six percent share, up two percentage points
  • Encore held a one percent share, down one percentage point

The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Encore and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 74,918 deliveries. That was good for a 25 percent segment share, commanding a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to push The General to the top.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 21 entries. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM: 25 percent share, four models
    • One model (Buick Encore) is discontinued and indirectly replaced by an upcoming one (Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai-Kia
    • 23 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 17 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru: 11 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis: 11 percent share, three models
  • Honda: nine percent share, one model
  • Mazda: six percent share, one model
  • Nissan: six percent share, one model
  • Toyota: four percent share, two models
  • VW: four percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi: one percent share, one model
  • Ford: zero percent share, one model (now discontinued)

Generally speaking, fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer. However, offering one model does not prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from performing well. As such, this seems to be a game of commanding more “shelf space” as opposed to cannibalizing sales.

Regardless, GM took first place this quarter, edging out Hyundai-Kia, no matter how you count the latter’s performance.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a healthy 25 percent to 311,326 units during Q2 2023, meaning Trailblazer sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Trailblazer sales kept it in second place from last quarter among (a whopping) 21 entries in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment. In fact, Trailblazer deliveries were strong in June, outpacing its performance in May.

This is in spite of tight inventory. For instance, Trailblazer inventory in May was just 12 days. A 60-day supply is considered optimal in the U.S. auto industry by many automotive sales organizations such as the National Automotive Dealers Association (NADA). For reference, a 60-day inventory level means that dealerships have enough inventory on hand to sustain sales volume for roughly the next 60 days.

Furthermore, when combining sales of multiple models from different manufacturers, GM leads the pack with its four models, ahead of the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate that also has four entries in this space – or five depending on how you look at it.

Looking ahead, we expect Trailblazer sales to continue to increase until GM reaches its production capacity for the model, as Chevy certainly seems to have a hit on its hands with the product. Additionally, we expect the four models fielded by GM in this segment to absolutely dominate the space, particularly once the Chevy Trax and Buick Envista launch in full swing.

About Chevy Trailblazer

In February GM revealed the refreshed 2024 Chevy Trailblazer, showing off slightly updated styling, an overhauled cockpit, new standard features, and other changes for the small crossover, which was originally introduced for the 2021 model year. The 2024 Trailblazer also introduces two new exterior paint colors, Cacti Green and Copper Harbor Metallic, along with a new interior colorway, Jet Black/Artemis Accent.

In November 2021 the Trailblazer received a perfect reliability rating by Consumer Reports. This was followed by the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer earning a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in February 2022, following the same award from IIHS in September 2021 for the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer. Last December Consumer Reports gave the 2023 Chevy Trailblazer a “recommended” rating.

While Q3 results are expected in a few HOURS, ahem, I expect that the Trax will cannibalize the TB to some extent.

Probably but I doubt it. The Trailblazer is already at a higher price point and has AWD which is a must have for some buyers. Did the previous Trax which had AWD cannibalize sales of the Trailblazer?

Dealers can’t get enough Trax and Trailblazers are picking up the slack. Both are selling extremely well.

To be honest it’s nice to see something like the trailblazer winning sales and staying in second place instead of some jacked up 4×4 V8 off road $90,000 pickup truck that never goes off road and constantly rides your tail while doing the speed limit! But anyway the trailblazer is a nice little vehicle and if that’s all you need then good for Chevy being in the number two spot. I know the numbers don’t lie but my father owned a Crosstrek it was one of worst vehicles he ever owned he couldn’t wait to get rid of it.
