Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales again dominated their segment during the third quarter of 2023 when ranked by sales volume on a combined basis, as they have for nearly two decades. However, the Bow Tie brand’s full-size SUV duo posted a combined eight percent decrease in sales to 39,661 units. Additionally, sales of the GMC’s full-size duo, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, which are corporate cousins to the Tahoe and Suburban and share the same architecture, were flat for 21,158 deliveries.

Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) placed first with a seven percent dip to 27,578 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes sales of the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed in second place with a 12 percent slip to 16,461 units. The Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales), the Tahoe’s extended-length variant, placed third with an 11 percent dip to 12,083 units. The regular-length GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales), took fourth with a seven percent decrease to 11,763 units, while the extended-length Yukon XL followed in fifth with a nine percent bump to 9,395 units. It’s worth noting here that the GMC SUVs also handily outsold the Ford duo. The Jeep Wagoneer, comprised of the regular-length Wagoneer and longer Wagoneer L (but not including the Grand Wagoneer), took sixth place with a 44 percent drop to 7,248 units. The Nissan Armada placed seventh with an 11 percent swell to 4,532 units, while the Toyota Sequoia finished last with 3,768 deliveries, though sales increased nearly 180-fold year-over-year as the redesigned 2023 Sequoia continues to hit the market.

The GM Authority Take

The Chevy Tahoe and Suburban duo continue to be kings of the mainstream full-size SUV segment. Combined with their corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, GM commands two-thirds of the space in spite of competitors’ new and updated models, though a refresh of The General’s offerings will arrive for the 2025 model year. In fact, even the GMC Yukon duo alone outsold both of the Expedition models, as well as the rest of the field.

Looking ahead, the UAW has now expanded its strike to the Arlington plant in Texas where the Tahoe, Suburban and Yukons are assembled. That will undoubtedly result in a reduction in supply, negatively impacting sales and GM’s bottom line in the short term. Once the strike is over, we expect sales of the duo to remain strong as they have remained, with supply being the biggest limiting factor for sales not expanding even further. In fact, the upcoming 2025 Tahoe and 2025 Suburban, which we expect to deliver vital mid-cycle refreshes, should result in even higher levels of interest in and sales of both nameplates.

About Chevrolet Tahoe And Suburban

The 2023 Chevy Tahoe introduces only a handful of updates over the preceding 2022 model, dropping in as the third model year for the latest fifth-generation full-size SUV nameplate. Changes include the addition of Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist. The Tahoe also gets a new Advanced Technology Package that includes the GM Super Cruise hands-free, semi-autonomous driver assistance feature along with expanded driving coverage.

The 2023 model year also offers a new 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition, plus the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Kit.

The 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Suburban arrive with one small change compared to the preceding 2023 model year.

While the 2024 Tahoe and Suburban were originally expected to introduce a mid-cycle enhancement for both SUVs, GM Authority was first to report that the refresh will take place for the 2025 model year instead. Here’s what we know and expect regarding the 2025 Tahoe and about the 2025 Suburban.
