Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Camaro sales kept the muscle car in third place in its segment when ranked by sales volume during the third quarter of 2023. The Dodge Challenger once again led from last quarter in spite of a 33 percent drop in sales to 11,075 units. It was followed by the Ford Mustang (see running Mustang sales numbers) with a five percent slip to 9,844 units. Camaro sales dipped seven percent to 7,351 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Camaro earned a 26 percent share, up three percentage points year-over-year. The Challenger held a 39 percent segment share, down a segment-worst eight percentage points, while the Mustang posted a 35 percent share, up five percentage points.

The two-door muscle car segment shrank 19 percent to 28,270 units during Q3 2023, meaning Camaro sales outperformed the segment average.

For reference, we provide sales results for the expanded mainstream two-door sports car segment below.

TOTAL -15.23% 33,506 39,524 +0.40% 115,020 114,561

While the Camaro remained in third place in this expanded segment with a 22 percent share, up two percentage points, it still moved nearly 2.7K more units than the remaining three competitors combined.

The mainstream two-door sports car segment shrank 15 percent to 33,506 units during Q3 2023, meaning Camaro sales outperformed the segment average in this expanded segment.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Camaro sales continued to drop during the third quarter of 2023, as did the remaining two-door muscle cars – a far cry from the 110 percent jump in Camaro sales during Q2 2023. But even though sales of the Camaro continue to lag those of its direct competitors, the Dodge Challenger and Ford Mustang, it still beats out the likes of the Toyota 86, Mazda MX-5 Miata, and Subaru BRZ, and by a wider margin this quarter. Even that expanded mainstream two-door sports car segment is still a small one, showing that this is a limited market in the scheme of things.

Going forward, we expect Camaro sales to continue to stay in the red.

2024 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 Collector’s Edition

About Chevrolet Camaro

The 2024 Chevy Camaro arrives as the ninth and final model year of the current, sixth generation, introducing a pair of special-edition models in the process: the 2024 Chevy Camaro ZL1 Garage 56 Edition, as well as the 2024 Chevy Camaro Collector’s Edition, both of which offer their own unique content and varying levels of exclusivity to pay homage to the first-gen Camaro’s internal program code – “Panther.”

While the Collector’s Edition is offered on all trim levels, only the ZL1 is offered with the Panther Black Matte paint, the first matte paint option ever offered on the Camaro.

A boatload of other changes for the 2024 Camaro include dropping two paint colors, the Shock and Steel Edition package, the lowered suspension package and the sway bar package, the 20-Inch Caliente wheels, the base 1LS trim level, and the turbo 2.0L LTG engine. Additionally, the 2024 Camaro SS 1LE Suspension Handling Package is no longer available while the full SS 1LE Track Performance Package remains available to order.

Pricing for the 2024 Camaro grows anywhere from $2,600 to $5,000, depending on trim level. In addition, there’s now a $200 increase in the destination freight charge to $1,595. Check out all of the 2024 Camaro pricing with options and packages.

While production of the 2024 Chevy Camaro kicked off in August, the 2024 Camaro will get a condensed production run, with fewer overall units planned. However, as GM Authority was first to report, GM will produce more 2024 Camaro units with the 6.2L V8 LT1 engine and 2024 Camaro ZL1 availability will increase over the 2023 model. In fact, per another GMA exclusive, GM will end 2024 Chevy Camaro production earlier than expected.

In March, GM slyly confirmed a next-generation Chevy Camaro will eventually be introduced to keep the nameplate alive. Along with many others, we eagerly anticipate what GM delivers for the next-generation of the Bow Tie brand’s muscle car, one with such a rich history that is dear to fans across generations. Until then, we’ll savor the Collector’s Edition while recognizing why GM is closing the door on the sixth-generation Chevy Camaro.

  1. If these companies can pay out massive salaries and bonuses for CEOs and management and pump billions into tech companies that don’t turn a profit (Cruze), they can afford to pay workers what they’re owed.
Stop buying the propaganda that these billion dollar businesses are on the brink of bankruptcy if laborers make a living wage.

    1. You missed the point. It’s about being competitive with foreign automakers who have lower cost structures. Union workers already have a “living wage”. They make way more than most people earn. I worked in factories for years and never came close to the high wages than auto workers are paid. As for “massive salaries” for auto executives, you might want to look at the salaries of union leaders, and you might want to consider the long history of union corruption in this nation.

  2. I’m a Camaro life long fan since it came on the scene to counter the Mustang in 1967. Will never forget the #6 Penske Sunoco Camaro Z28’s driven by Mark Donohue to fame and glory. A Bright Yellow 1974 Camaro Type LT was my first car. You never forget your first. The return of the Z28 in 1977. I made it a point to go to the local Chevy dealer and order the rear resonators and tailpipes off that car & installed them on my 74. To anyone not in the know, those resonators gave a sweet, chambered exhaust sound to the 77 through 81 Z28. The 82 Camaro was a breakthrough in design, handling and performance. I lusted after that car. I feel that design shines on through today, a truly dynamic appearance. I mourned the passing of the Camaro after 2002 and cheered on the people who brought the Camaro back in 2010. I root for the Hendrick Nascar Camaro’s, especially the 24 car. And it deeply saddens and disgusts me that these corporate suits running GM into the ground gives the public 200 different variations of an SUV/CUV SOULESS BREADBOX from which to choose from, while nonchalantly letting this great marque, this great soul of Chevy and GM, to die in the manner they are letting it pass.

There, I said it. If you’re gonna kill the Camaro ICE car, at least have a successor in this EV folly you people are determined to foist upon the American Car buyer.

    1. Well stated. Think almost all “crossovers” are ugly. Most aren’t even real SUVs. However, I must admit that I don’t care anything about a Camaro EV.

  3. GM is the only one to blame for bad sales . I ordered a 2023 2ss Camaro in December 4/2022 and never got it . And now ordered a 2024 2ss Camaro in June 5/2023 and looks like i will not get it now to. So sale figures are to blame GM management only for being so low. Dealerships want them but GM put them on allotments now and they lost sales for not delivering . Need new management at the top …

    1. Sales down?, I’ll buy one, build it. Car shopping isn’t supposed to be painful.

    2. I agree Joe. The numbers are really meaningless unless there is also disclosure of unfulfilled sales orders. GM is picking what they build, when they build it, and which dealer orders are accepted. It’s a far cry from the days when the customer got what they ordered at the negotiated price. Now when you order a vehicle you don’t know the price, you don’t know if it will be equipped as ordered, you don’t know when you will get the vehicle, or if you will even get the vehicle at all.

  4. I have a 2018 ZL1, probably the best car I’ve owned. I had every intention of upgrading to a new ZL1 preferably 1LE this year but no dealer has ZL1 allocations around here and the 1LE is gone. GM, don’t complain about declining sales when you won’t build the cars people actually want to buy. You should have put the LT5 motor in the ZL1 years ago. So it would need a new hood, no one cares. Mary Barra has to be the most incompetent manager to ever run an auto company.

    1. I agree with your comments on GM’s current corporate leadership. GM’s incredible drop in U.S. market share from nearly 60% in the 1970’s to less than 20% today began when they started promoting “non-car-people” to Division General Managers, who didn’t have a clue about what car appeal (styling and performance) was about.

  5. If I could find an LT1, I’d buy it.

  6. GM would have sold one more Camaro if they hadn’t denied my retiree discount and converted my April 2023 order for a 2SS 1LE to an August 2024 order and jacked the price almost $12,000!! I will never understand corporate philosophy.

  7. I bet sales would go up if they build the Camaros that are on order.

I ordered my 2024 ZL1 Camaro back in June and still have not heard a word.

GM needs to focus on the customer that is standing in front of them with cash in their hand.
