After an extensive eight-year commercial run and obtaining a high level of popularity in the South American country, the veteran third-generation Chevy Sail has officially been discontinued in Chile.
General Motors’ subsidiary in Chile has officially retired the Chevy Sail in the country, where until recently it was not only the brand’s highest volume model, but also the best-selling vehicle in the entire Chilean automotive market. After several months with limited inventory and low sales volumes, the Sail appeared on the Chevrolet Chile website as being “sold out.”
As such, the automaker has confirmed the departure of the third-generation Chevy Sail from its extensive vehicle portfolio in Chile – the Sail nameplate’s primary volume market and the last Latin American country where the veteran small sedan was still for sale. During its long life, the Sail achieved outstanding commercial success, and in 2022, it was the best-selling passenger car in the country with 6,721 units sold.
The official discontinuation of the Chevy Sail in Chile is the result of the model’s end of production in China, where it was designed and developed entirely by the Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) of the SAIC-GM joint venture. The outgoing Sail was Chevrolet’s entry-level sedan and went on to be sold in dozens of emerging markets around the world, including the domestic Chinese market and Mexico – rebadged as the previous Chevy Aveo.
In particular, the third-generation Chevy Sail was offered exclusively as a four-door sedan and was launched in early September 2015 in Chile. It stood out for being a simple and efficient vehicle with a good price-product ratio, the key to its high level of popularity among Chilean customers. The 109-horsepower 1.5-liter engine mated to a five-speed manual transmission was the only powertrain option in the country.
There is still a small volume of Chevy Sail units left in stock, despite manufacturing having ended several months ago at the GMÂ Dong Yue plant in the Chinese city of Yantai – where it was produced continuously since its official introduction as Sail 3 in China at the end of 2014. A replacement for the Sail in Chile has not yet been announced.

GM has a lot of options to rebadge as Sail. Buick Excelle, albeit larger, would make an interesting value proposition.
Never understood why some Chinese Buick models were not rebadged as Chevy for LATAM
