GM’s Ultium Cells Spring Hill Plant Increases Starting Wages

As covered by GM Authority back in August 2023, the Warren, Ohio Ultium Cells plant agreed to an interim pay raise with its workers amid ongoing negotiations between Ultium Cells management and the United Auto Workers (UAW) labor union. Now, the Spring Hill, Tennessee Ultium Cells plant has announced a boost in starting wages for several positions.

In regard to the specific wage increases, Production Operators and Quality Inspectors will start at $20 per hour, while Crew Leads will see $22 per hour. Process Maintenance Technicians have increased to $27 – $35 per hour while Facility Maintenance Technicians can make $29 – $36 per hour, of which the exact figures will be based on the level of experience.

“Our early-stage team members are crucial to our success, and we want our wages to reflect that importance,” Ultium Cells Spring Hill Plant Director Chris Desautels claimed in a statement. “Attracting the best talent in the area also allows us to identify, train, and promote those applicants into leadership positions early on.”

It’s worth noting that the Ultium battery plant is looking to add another 300 employees by the end of the year. In fact, by the end of the 2023 calendar year, the Spring Hill Ultium Cells plant will be responsible for the employment of 1,700 workers.

An interesting piece to keep an eye on is the ongoing General Motors-UAW negotiations over contract agreements. At present, workers for the joint venture aren’t included under UAW labor contracts, with the Ultium Cells venture claiming that folding its workers into negotiations isn’t viable. However, there has been outcry from various sources, including an Ohio Senator, that the Ultium Cells workers must be included in labor contracts.

  2. Spring Hill Tennessee is not cheap it was 20 yrs ago housings prices are in the mid 400s and up. And traffic here sucks anytime of the day. Starting pay at 20 an hour is like 15 and hr now. Most people in spring Hill work in Franklin, Brentwood,or Nashville . And with the cost of gas going up. Food and everything else 20an hr is laughable.

  3. I live in Thompson Station and work in Brentwood. I make almost $30/hr and barely afford rent here. So no, $20/hr isn’t enough for Spring Hill.

  4. For everyone crying about the COL I am sure the wages in China are a lot lower than $20.00 an hour. So do you want jobs or not ?

      1. We don’t work in china we work here they built it here . 20$ an hour isn’t enough to work the risk with the batteries.

    2. So you’re saying that living and working in middle Tennessee is the same as living and working in China?

  6. I have empathy for all hourly workers who are trying to live on hourly wages. The UAW is asking for $45 an hour ($32 plus a 40% increase) plus the medical benefits, paid vacation days, bonuses, and retirement benefits they already get for all workers. This is around $125k per compensation for a non trade skill worker and double what their fellow workers in non UAW plants. This will drive these auto companies out of business or to states that don’t have collective bargaining. Elon Musk is loving this.

    2. 40% increase over 4 yrs. And don’t forget about the surgical procedures the workers end up having to get to repair their bodies from the kind of work we do. If you do any time in a production plant a surgical procedure is going to happen sooner or later. I myself have had 5 in my 30 yrs. Both shoulders, right elbow, right wrist, and right thumb. We sure as hell deserve what we get paid and those that think otherwise wouldn’t probably last a week let alone a day on a production line!

  7. And they say move to FL, TX and TN for the cheap taxes and houses! LOL. Yes when they finally get to the NE standards then they too will feel the pain of being a taxed area regardless to how that tax is made! It shows in the schools, services, homes, etc. Then what are the politicians going to feed ya to get to their states! I am amused.

  8. I think the workers are due the cola increase, they were taken away during the brink of bankruptcy for the Big Three. They were promised that it would be restored, but they failed to give it back to them. My husband works for General Motors, and I’m a federal employee. When in fact during 2008 my income exceeded his, and he is still receiving the same hourly wage from then. I do not understand, how some people feel that they are receiving a fair salary when they’re not.

    1. All workers including the UAW folks deserve a pay increase and I don’t think anyone is disputing that. Do you think the offer of 20-21% increase over four years with 10% coming in year one, additional paid holiday, and increase in retirement benefits is not equitable?

    2. Public Employees were given trillions in Covid monies. Remember, private companies get their money from “profits”!!! All public unions have to do is vote Democratic and raise taxes. When ALL employees work for government, we will see how that works.

  9. Imanjunk, I live 20 miles from the GM Spring Hill plant and pay $1200 a year in property taxes for a 1800 square ft house on 7 acres.. Meanwhile, fools in the NE are paying more than that for adding a garage to their home. Research the best places to live or retire and neither will be on either coast in this country.

    1. That is cheap living and no income tax on top of it. As long as you can keep the OL out of the stores you will have a nice retirement.

    2. The 2019 UAW agreement with GM included a 3-4% wage increase in each of the four years leading up to the present strike and a profit sharing bonus of $1,000 per $1B in pretax profits which meant an $11,500 profit sharing bonus in 2022. For those who believe UAW membership works without a negotiated contract are uninformed.

    3. Wow, property taxes for a place like that would be about $10,000 per year here!

  10. Venezuela have more oil than Saudia Arabia. But U.S. government do not like 4 of 5 people in high government there. So U.S. punish 20 million brown skin people by taking away the only GDP producing products and jobs that feed this country 20 million people. For 20 years the U.S. have had its foot on the neck of these poor people all because we can not get alone with 4 or 5 individuals, what a shame. We could have $1.99 a gallon of gas if we allowed Venezuela to pump baby pump. The U.S. allow the mid Eastern countries to employ a monopolize oil empire and by our standard, that is suppose to be illegal. But the poor brown families has been destroyed for over 20 years now. If U.S. did not like what these 4 or 5 individuals was doing, then go in and take their ass out!!! and allow the 20 million of families to survive by pumping their only GDP producing and jobs business where they can live a better life and we can fight the monopolize Midle East oil system. But these are brown people that are hurting. The honest to God truth.

    1. You make some good points. But remember, Venezuela used to be a free and democratic country. The people began to believe that a socialist government would be better. So they vote in a socialist government and of course the country collapsed. Don’t blame the US for bad decisions by the people of Venezuela

      1. The people voted the president out. He used military dictatorial power to cheat the election process. That is why I say the U.S. government should take him out like we did in Iraq, and Libya, remember!!

I’m not coming out the front door for the battery company or gm for that matter I make fourth an hour and its become tough to get by on that and save money at the same time to feed two people in my home is almost 300 per week and gas for work medical bills they can shove 20 an hour and take the battery plant somewhere else the southern people have had it with California and the Yankees just leave we’re good without them

    1. James Ramsey, you talk crazy and backward. Remember the new workers will START OFF at $20 a hour with no experience or knowledge of the work process and will get yearly raises as they learn. In my observation, this is a good job for the people with no skills in trade type work. They will learn and gain knowledge and get paid a good start off salary, as they go along. And their wages will continue to increase as the unions bargains for them. Remember a lots of young people do not have a major skillset in craftsman type of work. This is a good opportunity for them. Do not think from only your mindset or your personal life conditions. Think about all the young people in your community that will benefit from this opportunity

Lol, prior to Saturn Corp/GM coming to Maury Country it was all farm land, and no jobs. Their presence boost the economy and that’s why it’s so much growth. So take it up with the state of Tennessee, Maury Country, and Spring Hill city officials.
As far anyone leaving, it’s Not gonna happen! Why don’t you move????
If all the companies and corporations, pulled out of Nashville, Spring Hill, and Columbia, it would be Dry bones there like it was when they arrived. Lol
