Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Canyon sales during the second quarter of 2023 kept Big Red’s midsize pickup last in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The Toyota Tacoma continued to command the top spot, while also being the only model to be in the green with a 14 percent bump to 63,262 units year-over-year, representing nearly half of all segment deliveries. The Chevy Colorado (see running Chevy Colorado sales), the Canyon’s corporate cousin, placed second with a 12 percent dip to 19,909 units. The Nissan Frontier took third with a 17 percent slide to 17,213 units, followed by the Jeep Gladiator in fourth with a 34 percent drop to 13,751 units. The Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) took fifth with a 22 percent decline to 12,618 units. The GMC Canyon (see running GMC Canyon sales) finished out the short list with an 11 percent slip to 6,708 units.

On a segment share basis, the Canyon maintained a five percent share. The Tacoma again dominated with 47 percent segment share, up a segment-leading eight percentage points year-over-year. The Colorado followed with a 15 percent share, down one percentage point. Sales of GM’s two midsize pickups, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, combined for 26,617 deliveries and a cumulative 20 percent segment share. While these results are healthy, they duo still moved less than half the units of the Tacoma. Additionally, the Colorado outsold the Canyon nearly three-to-one this quarter.

The midsize mainstream pickup truck segment dipped seven percent to 133,461 units in Q2 2023, meaning Canyon sales underperformed the segment average.

Below, we provide Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments, placing it above the Gladiator and Ranger in terms of sales this quarter.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Canyon sales were again at the bottom of the midsize mainstream pickup truck segment during the second quarter, as it has since its introduction for the 2015 model year. This performance, including the drop in sales volume, is completely normal during a generational changeover, and we expect Canyon sales to rebound as the all-new 2023 Canyon deliveries to dealers begin ramping up.

As it stands, Canyon sales are limited primary by inventory, as sources tell us that demand is substantially outpacing supply.

The first-ever 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition

About GMC Canyon

A year ago, GM unveiled the all-new 2023 GMC Canyon as the fresh, third generation of the midsize pickup, featuring revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of tech goodies. It also introduced the first-ever 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X, which is available with an exclusive Edition 1 package.

The first-ever 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition recently made its debut. This new variant takes off-roading to the next level, complete with tons of trail-ready upgrades over the standard 2023 Canyon AT4X, framed as “the most advanced and capable Canyon ever.” Furthermore, the 2024 Canyon AT4X and AT4X AEV Edition will both get a new launch control feature as part of the Baja Mode, improving performance both on-road and off-road. Consequently, the 2024 Canyon drops AT4X Edition 1 variant, which will be indirectly replaced by the new AT4X AEV Edition that incidentally gets a standard bed-mounted spare.

It’s worth noting that the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition and 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison basically share the same suspension configuration, which enables both trucks to stand tall with an identical 12.2 inches of ground clearance. However, there is one small difference. Check out how the suspensions differ.

GM also revealed that all trim levels of the 2024 Canyon will integrate Ultifi, the automaker’s new end-to-end vehicle software platform. Some potential uses of Ultifi include interfacing with the owner’s smart home, which could include functions such as switching on security systems when the owner leaves and turning them off when they return, changing the home temperature, and much more.

Additionally, the 2024 GMC Canyon gets GM’s TurboMax engine branding as the name, going forward, of the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine in the High-Output tune. That is the sole powertrain offered on all 2023 and 2024 Canyon trims.

The refreshed 2024 Jeep Gladiator Mojave X and Rubicon X variants

At the 2023 North American International Auto Show Stellantis unveiled the refreshed 2024 Jeep Gladiator as its updated rival to GM’s new off-road performance focused pickup truck models. Highlights include revised styling, new models, new technology features, and a wealth of off-road oriented equipment.

That follows similar, previous debuts of the all-new 2024 Ford Ranger and all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma.

All these new and updated model introductions, starting with The General, reveals what a competitive segment the Canyon and Colorado play in. We’ll see how sales shake out as these offerings get in front of buyers, with GM challenged to built enough units to satisfy demand for its new mid-size trucks, which take their respective nameplates to the next level in terms of off-road performance, and beyond.

    1. Agreed…plus these trucks are priced like full-sized trucks. When I bought my Sierra this summer, I looked at a new Canyon. I actually got cheaper payments on the Sierra…

    1. Its not going to get better with the strike going on. The problem is the factory just can’t build them fast enough either as well and delivery is a big issue. Its not just them many manufactures are still having issues.

      1. I hope Toyota is giving a small cut to the UAW for forcing all these Canyon / Colorado buyers into a Tacoma. Most likely never to return to a union vehicle.
Wonder how long it will be before Toyota is permanently the number one seller in the US. Nobody helps sell more non-union vehicles than the short-sighted UAW.

  5. Any chance of seeing Diesel engines in these nice lil trucks soon? Betcha sales will sky rocket if they offered this option!

  6. The launch has been a absolute joke for this truck. I have had a reservation for the AT4x Edition 1 for over a year. The build date in now pushed back to November. If it even gets built. Its called and Edition 1 for a reason. Not to get almost a year after the first ones hit the lot is a major turn off for the truck. I’m undecided on even taking the truck.

  7. Hey GM, how’s that 2.7L 4 cylinder turbo going over with buyers? The only engine option…..LOL!!

    Reply
    1. Really well. They just announced they drop the mid engine option with 390lbft so now all L3B engines are the high output 430lbft.

So they actually have 2 engine options now, the L3B and the base L2R… LOL!!

A lot of people are getting better than the EPA est rating and it is an absolute torque monster vs the old V6. So what’s your problem with it?

      Reply
      1. But it’s not even close to competitors. I would be driving a new Colorado right now if they got better than the previous models MPG

        Reply
        1. It is better, hence me saying it’s beating EPA. Look on fuelly, average about 2mpg better than the 3.6 or over 10% better. That’s a solid gain for a pickup truck

  8. ‘Really well’…..with 5% market share. LOL. Ok.

    1. 20% with Colorado. That’s what matters to GM. And the EPA held up sales so that quarter was a miss.

  9. Well maybe if you can put a 3.0 Duramax in, to boost the mpg!? 19 mpg is the reason I’m looking at a new Tacoma…

    Reply
    1. Baby duramax will not fit. Engine compartment is very similar to pervious generation. This was not a clean sheet redesign.

      Reply
    2. Won’t fit, you’ve got 6 cylinders in a row, it’s along engine. An I5 maybe but you likely wouldn’t also be able to have a high clearance bumper

  10. Of course Toyota is gonna come on top they’re the only ones making a manual transmission truck, even i was considering a new Sierra until i saw the new 2024 Tacoma
