Starting out as one of the 10 GM vehicles among the 52 contestants for the 30th annual North American Car, Truck and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards, or NACTOY, the GMC Canyon pickup truck survived the first round of jury selection to be one of 25 “Best of 2024” semifinalists advancing to the next phase of the awards process.
A recent announcement by the NACTOY organization stated that the GMC Canyon is one of the five semifinalist trucks in the Truck of the Year category, while 10 cars and 10 utility vehicles move forward in the other two awards categories to contend for one of the nine finalist slots.
GM pickups continue to dominate the 2024 North American Truck of the Year category after the initial round of picks, with the Canyon joined by the Chevy Colorado and Chevy Silverado EV. While The General’s nameplates occupy three out of five semifinalist slots among trucks, Ford is still in the running, with the Blue Oval’s new Ford Ranger and Ford Super Duty also on the list.
Following the NACTOY philosophy that “we all evaluate vehicles in a different way,” expressed by organization president Jeff Gilbert, 50 automotive journalists comprise the Awards jury. Using a selection of North American journalists unaffiliated with NACTOY provides a fairer outcome, with Gilbert remarking the “value of these awards is in the expertise and diverse perspectives of our jurors.”
The results of the awards are monitored by consumers, the media, and the automakers themselves to see which vehicles meet the criteria of excellence needed to win. The “Best of 2024” semifinalists were chosen at an event held at the Huntington Place convention center in Detroit.
The GMC Canyon will now receive “further evaluation” along with the other contestants. Michigan will provide the venue for an October NACTOY competition drive giving the jurors “more time driving” the remaining vehicles, “learning more about them and comparing them with the competition,” Gilbert said.
Following this hands-on test, the jury will reconvene on November 16th at the Los Angeles Auto Show to deliver their verdict. Three vehicles from each of the three categories of Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle will be selected as finalists. One winner in each category will be picked and announced at an additional NACTOY event se to take place on January 4th, 2024. The current semifinalists can be viewed here:
