GM has issued a customer satisfaction program to fix certain units of the 2015 through 2022 Chevy Colorado pickup trucks that include a mislabeled base front differential carrier.
Affected units of the Chevy Colorado were built with an incorrect 12-millimeter (half-inch) hole on the top surface of the front differential housing.
GM instructs dealers to use the GM Global Warranty Management system to verify a particular vehicle is involved in the customer satisfaction program. Chevy Colorado units that are affected by the program and eligible for the fix are marked as “Open” on their Investigate Vehicle History screen.
If a specific Chevy Colorado is found to be involved, dealership service personnel should conduct an inspection of the top surface of the truck’s front differential housing. If a 12-millimeter hole is present in the surface, the carrier is mislabeled and dealer service can proceed to apply the fix.
For affected units of the 2015 through 2022 Chevy Colorado pickup that are found to have the hole in the front differential housing’s top surface, the dealer should rebuild the front axle with the proper housing. This will require a lengthy list of new differential components, along with front axle parts including, but not limited to, clutch shaft components, clutch fork components, and inner shaft parts.
The customer satisfaction program is currently active. It will continue to be available through September 30th, 2025. The repair is offered free of charge to owners of affected 2015 through 2022 Chevy Colorado truck units.
Notably, GMC Canyon pickup truck units from the 2015 through 2022 model years may be affected by the same problem and be eligible for the same repair from the appropriate dealerships.
Owners of potentially affected 2015 through 2022 Chevy Colorado pickups can contact Chevrolet customer service at the toll-free telephone number listed below, referencing the GM program number as needed, if they have further questions:
Contacts:
- GM customer satisfaction program number: N222389360
- Chevy customer service number: 1-800-222-1020
The affected 2015 through 2022 model years of the Chevy Colorado include the truck’s entire second generation, which launched with the 2015 Chevy Colorado and ended with the 2022 Chevy Colorado.
The 2023 Chevy Colorado launched the mid-size truck’s third generation with a complete overhaul from the previous model year. The changes and updates to the truck include new exterior styling, a fully reworked cockpit, and new powertrains.
Under the skin, the 2023 Chevy Colorado rides on an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform with a 3.1-inch longer wheelbase to accommodate the installation of 35-inch tires. Production of the truck takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

And what does this mislabeled carrier and a 1/2″ hole on top of the housing have to do with performance/reliability? What are the symptoms? My son has a ’19 and the 4×4 works just fine.
The article isn’t clear, but if they are rebuilding them it sounds like it’s an open hole that would allow water, dirt, and etc into the differential housing. This would contaminate the lubricant and shorten the life of all of the internal components. It’s hard to believe that they built these for years with an open hole that no one noticed or thought to plug.
And That no one saw oil under their truck and was concerned for years
True but if the hole was on top of the housing, 90W gear lube might not sling out very much. I suspect they were beginning to fail from water intrusion which would take a long time unless you were submerging the differential.
Oh, dang, I wasn’t asking what the symptoms would be if the hole was left open! I know what those would be. I never even considered an open hole! Dam, that puts a whole (pun intended) new twist into the article.
My mind was into a weak housing or something along those lines. Here I’m thinking a vent hole with appropriate fittings and hose leading up into the engine bay or maybe a fill-hole plug. NOT A HOLE TO THE ATMOSPHERE!
Is there going to be a recall or do we have to do it ourselves I have been smelling gear oil on my truck since I bought it new in 2017.
The repair is free!
Union quality work, no one noticed when installing that there was an unplugged hole above the differential. Yeah I need a raise.
It all boils down to management, training, and the QA. Back at my previous job, a firearm barrel was assembled with the wrong frame. Apparently, it had gone on for 13 years and nobody noticed, not even the super picky shooting range. No customers complained, either. It all went back to a previous assembly line lead, who misremembered which frame the barrel was supposed to attach to.
Yea they deserve a 40% raise for that and a 32 hour work week for not bringing it to the attention of someone , the first line of defense really screwed that one up. Go to Mexico know body will miss you
My truck is already at the dealership for a warranty claim for a leaking pinion seal on the rear differential. I’ll send them this link. See what they say.
It sounds like this is all true? Is it?
I didnt hear a thing about it til I read it now.
My truck is ok right now. 17 work truck
I just called the number provided in the article because I did see a hole in my front diff that looks exactly like how it is described in the article. GM had no knowledge of the recall, and the program number came back with nothing. So what’s up with this article? Am I missing something?
