The refreshed 2024 Ford F-150 truck is set to introduce a multifunction tailgate, a teaser from the Blue Oval reveals, as was predicted back in December 2022 by our sister website Ford Authority.
The 2024 Ford F-150 multifunction tailgate will provide a competing feature to the Chevrolet Multi-Flex tailgate offered on the Chevy Silverado and the GMC MultiPro tailgate available on the GMC Sierra and GMC Hummer EV Pickup.
With no official information on the 2024 Ford F-150 tailgate available yet, only inferences from what can be seen in the teaser images can be reported at this point. A line at the tailgate’s center appears to show a middle section capable of being lowered separately. This section is larger than the equivalent used on GM’s multifunction tailgates.
Furthermore, the Ford multifunctional tailgate looks to be notably thicker or deeper than GM’s. This dimensional difference gives it more internal space than competing tailgate designs from The General, though at this point it’s unknown exactly what compartments or other features will be found in the 2024 Ford F-150 truck’s tailgate.
The Blue Oval has had the tailgate apparently making its debut on the 2024 Ford F-150 in development for some time now. Ford Authority obtained spy photos of the Ford multifunction tailgate being prototyped as early as summer 2020. Ford is also known to have benchmarked multiple types of GM tailgates along with the Ram multifunction tailgate.
Meanwhile, the revamped 2024 Ford F-150 will feature a backlit grille logo, new headlights, new taillights, a revised grille design, new 22-inch wheels, an optional modular front bumper, and other significant exterior and interior updates.

Updated F150 to make its debut at the Detroit Auto show this week?

MinE has rocks stuck insidE it…but has been very useful for the most part.
So basically they copied GM for their tailgate design. 🥱
Actually it’s the other way around. Credit goes to Ford engineer and product manager Donald N. Frey. He created the original “dual action” tailgate in 1966 that was known as the magic door gate. Ford also introduced the first tailgate step and grab handle. Remember GM’s commercials making fun of Ford’s man step? Honda Ridgeline also had a dual action tailgate before GM. Just because GM threw together others ideas, doesn’t make it original.
Hopefully Ford designed theirs so that it doesn’t have a top handle indentation with drain holes that drain on the switches unlike the GMC/Chevy’s. I’ve had 4 switches replaced so far in 15 months. GM recently came out with a TSB on the issue. I can’t believe that the TSB took so long however more unbelievable is that it was designed that way in the first place!
