SAIC-GM, General Motors’ main joint venture in China, has just announced the creation of a new software and digital business arm in the Asian country.
SAIC-GM’s new software and digital business arm was recently approved by the Shanghai-based automaker’s board of directors, where it will operate as an independent division within the company’s organizational structure. With this decision, the automaker seeks to accelerate the development of technological solutions to strengthen the competitiveness of smart connected vehicles.
Along with the announcement of the new technology division, SAIC-GM appointed Wang Chendong and Tyson Becker as executive vice presidents. Both execs have extensive experience in the area and a solid career within the company dedicated to the Chinese market, so they are qualified to lead the joint venture’s new commitment as a reference for smart connectivity in the automotive industry.
As such, Wang Chendong and Tyson Becker will be tasked with establishing a local task force for SAIC-GM’s new software and digital business arm. The organization’s mission is to design, develop and operate software solutions and services for the corporation’s entire line of vehicles aimed at creating the best-in-class smart, connected and digital experience for customers in China in technologies such as OnStar and Super Cruise.
Previously, Wang was Director of Product, Marketing and Strategy of SAIC-GM Connectivity and Experience, Executive Director of SAIC-GM connected vehicle lineup, and General Manager of SAIC Intelligent Vehicle Innovation and Development. While Becker has been Director of GM China Digital Business, Product Director of GM China Premium Import, General Manager of Shanghai OnStar and Deputy CEO of the SAIC-GM Connected Vehicle Line.
SAIC-GM says the new software and digital business arm will bring faster innovation in software development and accelerate the digitization of the company’s next-generation vehicles in China. With this, the company will be able to create cutting-edge solutions to meet diverse customer needs and support its corporate vision of “leading smart mobility and achieving a better life.”

Now China can copy all of the software as well!
Why do I have a really bad feeling about this joint development initiative? Yes I read that this IT division is for the Chinese market but how soon do you think that it will be before this Chinese division gets its hands on the U.S. map information? OnStar could get within 30 feet dead-center of my home location. China doesn’t need sophisticated spy satellites all they have to do is type in all the co-ordinates of every important strategic U.S. location courtesy of Onstar. Of course they probably bought gm’s & Tesla cars and have this information already. I hope that our government is watching this development. As our government banned Tik-Tok I guess that China needed a replacement.
