William Byron is a force to be reckoned with this year – he just put the No. 24 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 back in Victory Lane for the fifth time on August 20th, 2023, dominating the Cup Series race at Watkins Glen.
Byron’s win at Watkins Glen marks his first career victory on a road course, and he secured it in absolutely dominant fashion. He led 66 of 90 laps, crossing the line 2.632 seconds ahead of second-place Denny Hamlin’s No. 11 Toyota TRD Camry.
When asked if it he felt it was his most dominant race win, Byron said, “Yeah, I would have to think about that a little bit though. But it definitely feels really good, just a huge credit to the race team behind me. I want to thank Max Papis. My first road course win and we worked years and years for this.”
He added, “Thanks to all the guys on the team. I did a lot of laps on iRacing this week, got a new simulator at home. It’s a great win. It shows when we’re at our best we can perform like this.”
Unfortunately, it wasn’t all good for The Bow Tie on Sunday – the most popular driver is in danger of missing the 2023 Playoffs, meaning he won’t be able to compete for the championship. Chase Elliott’s No. 9 NASCAR Chevy ran out of fuel late in the race at Watkins Glen, forcing a caution and ultimately finishing one lap down. He now must win next weekend at Daytona to make the Playoffs field.
