The No. 24 NASCAR Chevy Camaro ZL1 of William Byron was penalized and not allowed to participate in qualifying for the Cup Series race on the Indianapolis Road Course, which will take place on August 13th, 2023.
Byron’s No. 24 NASCR Chevy race car failed pre-qualifying inspection three times. As per the sanctioning body’s guidelines, Byron was banned from Saturday’s qualifying session. His car chief was ejected for the rest of the weekend, and he will serve a pass-through penalty after the green flag drops on Sunday’s race. The No. 24 NASCAR Chevy team also lost pit stall selection, and Byron will start dead last in 39th. NASCAR did not disclose the infraction that resulted in the penalty.
Things aren’t all bad for The Bow Tie, as a Camaro will lead the field to the green flag: the No. 99 Chevy of Daniel Suárez turned the fastest lap during qualifying, with a best time of 87.968 seconds at 99.814 mph. Meanwhile, Shane van Gisbergen will start eighth in the No. 91 Camaro, having posted a lap of 88.544 seconds at 99.164 mph.
Mike Rockenfeller, who is subbing in the No. 42 Camaro for the suspended Noah Gragson, will start 37th.
The green flag will fall on the Indy Road Course at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
