NASCAR Chevy Teams Tail Ford At Indy Road Course 2023: Video

Though a NASCAR Chevy team led the field to the green flag for the Cup Series race at the Indy Road Course on August 13th, 2023, The Bow Tie wasn’t so lucky at the drop of the checkered flag, following the taillights of Michael McDowell’s No. 34 Ford Mustang across the line.
The No. 99 Chevy Camaro ZL1 of Daniel Suárez captured the pole position as the fastest qualifier, but he’d only lead six laps throughout the race. He was overtaken early by McDowell’s No. 34 Mustang, and to add insult to injury, a slow stop on Lap 49 spelled disaster for the No. 99 NASCAR Chevy team. His left front tire came down on an air hose during the stop, costing him a precious six seconds on track.
“We win, and we lose as a team, and that’s all I can say,” said Suárez, who bounced back to finish third. “I felt like I was always one step behind the No. 9 and the No. 34, and then at the end, I felt that when my car came alive again, we had that issue… Just a little bit heartbreaking, but that’s part of the sport.”
Meanwhile, the No. 9 Camaro of Chase Elliott attempted to reel in McDowell’s No. 34 Mustang as the laps ticked down. Elliott, having missed several races this year due to an injury and later, a suspension, is in a must-win situation if he wants to compete in the Playoffs this year, and just couldn’t seal the deal at Indy.
“Just really appreciate the effort, man,” Elliott said. “Our NAPA Chevy was really good, really good. Just needed just a little bit more and came up a bit short. But congrats to Michael, man. He did a good job. Ran a great race and stayed mistake-free, and that’s what you’ve got to do to win.”
