GM Authority has learned that General Motors’ crosstown rival, Ford Motor Company, will reveal a new mid-engine Ford Mustang supercar on Thursday. The new mid-engine Mustang will be unveiled in Monterey, California during the world-famous Monterey Car Week, and will be built by Multimatic. The new mid-engine Ford Mustang was shown to a select group of people in Las Vegas on Monday. Ford has never offered a mid-engine Mustang, with the exception of a one-off concept in the ‘60s.
According to GM Authority sources, and reported by our sister publication, Ford Authority, the new mid-engine Ford Mustang will be built by Multimatic, and although it will be branded as a Mustang, it will not ride on the S650 platform. Multimatic also built the Ford GT supercar, and currently builds the Ford Bronco DR. At this point, it’s unclear where the new mid-engine Mustang will be built, but given Multimatic will be responsible for the assembly, it’s possible the new mid-engine Mustang will be built in Markham, Ontario, Canada, the same location as the Ford GT. It’s not clear if the new Mustang-branded product is based on the GT, but sources indicate that is considered to be a supercar.
Critically, Multimatic also builds the Ford Mustang GT3 and GT4. Ford’s relationship with the Canadian-based automotive supplier has expanded considerably over the course of the last several years.
The Ford Mustang nameplate has traditionally been attached to front-engine, ICE-based performance machines, but that tradition was upended when FoMoCo launched the Ford Mustang Mach-E for the 2021 model year. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is a battery-powered crossover, with the name inspired by the first-generation Ford Mustang Mach 1.
Monterey Car Week is an annual series of high-profile automotive events held on California’s central coast, and includes auctions, parties, and racing, culminating in the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. This year, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance will be held on Sunday, August 20th.

So first an EV named Mustang that looks nothing like a Mustang, now a supercar named Mustang that also probably looks nothing like a Mustang. If it’s supposed to be exotic, why not cash in on the racing pedigree and build something a step down from the GT, and name it appropriately? Lord knows it’ll be priced that way…I thought ‘Mustang’ represented ‘obtainable’?
Let me guess: mid-engined ‘supercar’ has Mustang name justified by 3-segment sequential taillights?
So are you thinking this will be priced like a Corvette?
Good luck to Ford. They’ve got a lot of lost ground to make up to catch up with the Corvette.
Seeing as that they’re still using Multimatic to build it says that it will likely be very low volume. Perhaps Z06/ Z07 production numbers.
Farley is trying to copy FCA/Stellantis by making Mustang a Dodge rival; Bronco, Bronco Sport and Explorer a Jeep rival; F 150 as RAM and soft vehicles like Escape as a Chrysler type of market position.
This is also evident with Ford Blue, Model E. FIAT did save Chrysler Corp by only focusing on high margin vehicles but long-term killed Dodge and Chrysler not to mention got very lucky with a inherited technology, vehicles and Ralph Gills. Ford will NEVER ve Detroit’s or one of the World’s most profitable automakers. Mopar got lucky with product, CEO’s and owning Jeep.
I wish GM would try building some rivals to the Jeep and Bronco. I am tired of waiting and l’m seriously considering a Bronco, I would never buy a Chrysler Jeep. A vintage Willys or AMC Jeep, yes.
Save yourself a huge expensive mistake and cross the Bronco off your list. Huge problems there with the I-4 turbo engines in it.
So do not buy with that engine!
You don’t have to get the 2.3 liter turbo I-4. You can always get one with the 2.7 twin-turbo V6 or the 3.0 twin-turbo V6 if you buy the Raptor.
Big Bend – 2.3 only
Black Diamond – 2.3 (2.7 optional)
Heritage – 2.3 (2.7 optional)
Outer Banks – 2 3 (2.7 optional)
Badlands – 2.3 (2.7 optional)
Everglades – 2.3 only
Wildtrak – 2.7 only
Heritage Limited – 2.7 only
Raptor – 3.0 twin-turbo only
With GM’s recent lifter problems and lack of concern I’d likely buy a Dodge Product regardless.
On the 3-segment taillights:
I’d be awfully surprised if it didn’t’.
Plus, with extreme low volume, it’ll probably cost at least $100k more.
I thought I saw the “ford” GT was 1.7M. If this is being built by Multimatic, I’d expect at least 500K, the price of the GT a few years ago.
“I thought ‘Mustang’ represented ‘obtainable’?”
Just as F150 once meant “Standard 8 foot box” and “Affordable by people who work for a living”.
This reminds me of a comment a former girl friend said to me as a gray haired gentleman drove next to us in a new Mustang convertible…her comment was
“ pour guy driving a mustang, obviously couldn’t afford Porch or Corvette, just looks wrong to see a gray haired guy in a mustang, he must not be successful”.
Now every time I see an older guy in a mustang I think about that.
Ignore it. It’s not a Mustang, really. It’s a born-again (for the 50th time) GT. That only exists to calm the shakes that Billy and Jimbo are having now that the GT is gone. And it’s the 100th waste of money and resources by Ford this year on a low-volume absurdity.
Well, I’m excited to see what they release. I’m sick of all the EVs and crossovers for old women.
Unless it’s going to be an EV. I’m not completely against some sort of performance optimized hybrid; as there’s already several before and now. But I have a tendency to lose interest when something is purely electric, no matter how quick it is.
Alas, I’m not even a Mustang fan, nor do I dislike them. I’m just thinking in general terms.
I’ve never liked Ford (bad luck with their engines and transmissions years ago), but if similar performance to a Z06 and dealer pricing is managed better than Chevy dealers, I am interested…GM didn’t get me a Z06 after 2 years of waiting, so what better capitalist-punishment would there be than losing business to their rival? I might even put one of those Calvin-pissing stickers on it…
Blasphemy mentioning Corvette and Mustang in the same sentence. More like an oxymoron?
Doesn’t anyone fear this is exactly what GM is going to do to the Corvette nameplate?
Feels like Ford is crafting Mustang to be a brand within the brand. Exactly what GM has hinted at doing with Corvette. First the Mach e, now a mid-engine, and still retain the original coupe/convertible. Maybe if sedans come back into vogue, they do a Mustang 4 door…
I don’t like where all this is going…
More Ford trash!!!!
I’m not a Mustang fan or a Corvette fan they’ve both had decades of ugly styles, but I do like the mid engine Corvette. Hopefully the mid engine Mustang will live up to the name.
Eckerts rod and custom Mach Forty or Mach 40.
what about that mid-engine mustang?
Hmmm….wondering if this thing will be outrageously priced like the unobtanium Ford GT was ? Seems like a sure thing after seeing who the builder is ! Unlike GM that has a separate factory to assemble the Vette, Ford has to rely on a very small (comparatively) specialty builder. Wondering if this spells the death of the front engine Mustang which is so much better looking than the slow-selling Camaro. ? With Dodge killing the Charger/Challenger and GM killing the Camaro ( both next year) the Pony car seems to have died.
I would have used these dollars to give damaged brand Lincoln something we actually want to buy. The LS was the last real Lincoln with everything afterwards being garbage. Ford is doomed.
If its priced like a GT only a Foolish Old Retired Dunce would buy one
This is useless for most of us, it will not be mass produced. Just like the Ford GT, Multimatic is only capable of making a couple thousand a year, (if that).
That means even if it had an MSRP less than $150k, markups will make it unaffordable and really just a car for collectors.
I wish Ford would make a serious attempt at a mass produced sports car to compete with the Vette, but I understand why they don’t. Such a tough market to enter with GM having the benefit of decades to refine the platform to what it is today.
Don’t forget, it won’t be a Ford, it will be a Multimatic. And they can’t build very many cars. There will only be a handful and the price will be astronomical. Once again, they will wind up sitting in investors dark warehouses. Absolutely a non player. All while the mid engine Corvette is well past 100,000 units already.
Call it whatever you want. I want one!!!
I finally got my C8, HTC , 2LT, January 31st 2023. I love this car but GM says I cannot modify it or I will lose my extended warranty. GM has always been a stickler, for performance mods and they rarely offer their own. What I like about Ford , you could tune it etc. and dealerships said nothing. If Ford would of done this years ago, like GM did, I would of bought a Ford Mustang because of permitted mods and also I am not getting any younger. By the way, I have owned 4 Mustang Gt s and none have ever given me trouble , not even under warranty. But I have seen dozens of Camaros and Vettes break at drag strips and our Mustangs stayed solid.
Who’s running GM anyway, a girl?
In reality? The same 2 entities that own and run just about every company that matters.
Ford would be better off reviving the Thunderbird as a two seat mid engine sports car.
Thunderbird is coming back as an SUV 4-door coupe which means it will look like an egg.
What many of you miss is the sales of the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger are horrible for a car in this price class. It needs to sell at a higher price to really be much value to mfgs.
Years ago these cars sold in better numbers but also shared much with cheap volume cars like the zFalcon and Nova. This drove volume and kept prices down.
That formula today is broken. Ford has to go up on price to retain the low volume and mid engine will help do this.
I would not call it a Mustang as it should be a GT 40.
The pony car is dead as there are just not enough buyers anymore and no cheap sedans to base them on.
Moving the names is not the answer at best an EV coupe may come back but I would use a new name.
These automakers are struggling to invest in new EV tech to help them meet regulations in the future that are being forced on them while trying to get all the money from the ICE line as they can now.
These performance niche markets are not big money makers outside Corvette,
I do wish GM had built a better Jeep but again more money is made on boring CUV models. They make money.
While GM may be boring they are doing much better than most automakers. Ford is in bad shape money wise. Cool vehicles are just not bringing in the needed money and the aluminum in the F series has hurt profits.
We the auto enthusiast drove the market for several decades but that is over now. We are just a part of the Parker and not a priority as they don’t make much money off us vs the soccer moms.
“The pony car is dead as there are just not enough buyers anymore and no cheap sedans to base them on. ”
Seriously? Have you seen how many Mustangs (new ones) are on the road? I don’t know where you ever got that idea.
Another unaffordable vehicle. Clueless management. Can you imagine a specialty company making these.
Clueless in Dearborn
Mary’s competition to lose customers.
Dumb
I would take this and work up a LWB, mid-engine V8, 2+2, 4-door version as a halo Lincoln. Lincoln did show a 4-door mid-engine concept back in the 1980’s.
And please style the vehicle for Lincoln by an Italian coachbuilder with deTomaso Pantera vibs. Lincoln needs a halo vehicle, and this would be so choice.
They didn’t want to try the probe nameplate again 😄… If you ask me the thunderbird should have evolved into a vette competitor way back in the day.
Despite all the Corvette’s advantages on paper, the Thunderbird outsold its rival by more than 23-to-one when it first came out in 1955. While Ford built this car as a direct rival to the Corvette, they also wanted to put an emphasis on its comfort and convenience features, rather than driving dynamics.
They screwed up in 1958 going to the 4 seater.
