Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Trax sales during the second quarter of 2023 placed the Bow Tie’s subcompact crossover in fifth place among 21 entries in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment when ranked by sales volume. The Subaru Crosstrek remained at the top spot from last quarter, when we added this model to the segment mix, posting a 36 percent increase in sales to 34,568 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and the second segment entry from Chevy, stayed in second place with a solid 112 percent jump to 33,857 units, putting it within roughly 700 deliveries of first place. The Jeep Compass moved up to third with a 28 percent bump to 28,083 units, while the Honda HR-V slipped to fourth with an 11 percent slide to 27,406 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) moved up 10 spots to fifth with a segment-best 115 percent jump to 20,921 units. The rest of the crowded field earned less than 20K deliveries each. That includes the Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, which moved up to ninth place with a 99 percent improvement to 18,055 units, and the discontinued Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), the second segment entry from Buick, which remained in 18th place with a 59 percent drop to 2,085 units. From a segment share standpoint, the Trax earned a seven percent segment share, up three percentage points year-over-year. The Crosstrek led with an 11 percent segment share, up one percentage point. The Trailblazer also posted an 11 percent share, up a segment-best five percentage points. The Compass maintained a nine percent share, while the HR-V also earned a nine percent share, down a segment-worst three percentage points. The two other GM models in this space fared as follows:

  • The Encore GX posted a six percent share, up two percentage points
  • The Encore held a one percent share, down one percentage point

The four GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer along with the Buick Encore and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 74,918 deliveries. That was good for a 25 percent segment share, commanding a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to propel The General to the top.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 21 entries. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 25 percent share, four models (one model – Buick Encore – discontinued, indirectly replaced by an upcoming one – Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai-Kia
    • 23 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 17 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 11 percent share, three models
  • Honda – nine percent share, one model
  • Mazda – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – six percent share, one model
  • Toyota – four percent share, two models
  • VW – four percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
  • Ford – zero percent share, one model (now discontinued)

Generally speaking, fielding multiple entires in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, that doesn’t prevent those with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – from performing well. As such, this seems to be a game of commanding more “shelf space” as opposed to cannibalizing sales.

Regardless, GM took first place this quarter, edging out Hyundai-Kia.

The mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew a healthy 25 percent to 311,326 units during Q2 2023, meaning Trax sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Trax sales have taken an upward trajectory to post the best growth in the segment. This is all thanks to the arrival of the all-new 2024 Chevy Trax. The model is a best-seller in South Korea, where it is built at a dedicated assembly plant. The all-new model has also recently launched in Mexico as well as in the Philippines, for the first time ever. In fact, GM just announced that Chevy Trax and Trailblazer led June 2023 auto exports in Korea, marking the first time the two models have taken the export podium together in the Asian country.

GM CEO Mary Barra recently was quoted as saying that GM delivered more than 20,000 units of the 2024 Trax during the second quarter, of which half went to customers who are new to GM. She added that the extreme popularity of the new Trax in South Korea gave it a 50 percent segment share among compact crossover sales in that market, while two-thirds of South Korean Trax buyers during Q2 2023 were first-time GM customers.

We expect Trax sales to continue to grow in the coming months and quarters as supply and inventory improve at the dealer levels, allowing quick turn and higher sales levels. GM is set up very well to meet the exorbitant demand for the new Trax by carving out high levels of production for the new model.

About Chevy Trax

GM debuted the next-generation 2024 Chevy Trax last October as the Bow Tie’s new entry-level crossover.

Outside, the 2024 Chevy Trax incorporates the Bow Tie brand’s latest design language for internal combustion-powered models, taking after the Chevy Blazer crossover. The new Trax is longer, lower, and wider than the preceding model. Up front is a set of LED headlamps, configured within a dual-level cluster. Five trim levels are on offer – LS, 1RS, LT, 2RS, and Activ; each include their own unique styling bits, from wheels to grille treatments.

Furthermore, the 2024 Chevy Trax offers a new Blackout Package.

Inside, the new 2024 Trax is roomier than the preceding model, and offers more safety features and tech, including a standard eight-inch diagonal infotainment screen on LS and 1RS trims, while higher-end LT, 2RS, and Activ trims get an 11-inch screen. Further onboard tech includes Active Noise Cancelation and cruise control, while Adaptive Cruise Control is offered on most trims.

Improvements to the 2024 Chevy Trax’s turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine help bring total output to 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. It is the same powerplant found in the Chevy Trailblazer LS and LT trim levels. Additionally, the 2024 Trax boasts improved fuel economy over the previous-generation 2022 Chevy Trax.

Only front-wheel-drive is available while the outgoing Trax offered an all-wheel-drive option. Those who would like AWD will need to move up to the aforementioned Trailblazer.

The 2024 Trax is one of 10 GM models among North American Car of the Year candidates, competing with six of those in the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category. The list includes Trax, the new-for-North America Buick Envista, the refreshed Cadillac XT4, the Chevy Blazer EV, the Chevy Equinox EV, and the GMC Hummer EV SUV. The first-ever 2024 Envista is an indirect replacement for the discontinued Buick Encore and will show up in sales for the mainstream subcompact crossover segment next quarter.

Having spent some wheel time with the all-new Trax, GM Authority Executive Editor, Alex Luft, was quite impressed with the new model, describing it as “the Corvette of its segment,” particularly when it comes to handling prowess.

  1. The new Trax looks nice. Around here Crosstreks are very popular. My Son replaced his 2004 S10 Blazer 5-speed manual with a Crosstrek and now is on to another one. Both manuals. Almost same exact size as the old 2 door Blazer. Still think Trax needs and OPTION to lead the segment.

  2. GM needs to increase the supply of the 2024 Trax, especially the Activ trim and Cacti green exterior. I can’t even order one now for some reason.

  3. It’s the old story, supply and demand for Canada. Dealerships demand more vehicles but GM can’t ship and supply. Then it makes customer’s mad And they go to your competition. End of story. I had 3 vehicles on order a still waiting for build date’s. Need new managers that have customer care in mind.

          1. I don’t think it’s that bad, takes just as long (sometimes longer) to order a Corvette. I’m not worried, there are dealer stock vehicles in the mix, mine is no more important than those. That’s what I get for ordering a late-availability color during the time they’re trying to get them stocked.

  6. I have no doubt that sales will continue to increase, as long as GM doesn’t fiddle with the price (they already have) much. I don’t believe that the Trailblazer won’t suffer at the hands of the Trax, though.
The LONG wait for vehicles to arrive from S Korea is a bummer.
