Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

When ranked by sales volume on a combined basis, Chevy Tahoe and Suburban sales continued to dominate their segment during the second quarter of 2023, as they have for over a dozen years now since we started tracking sales. The Bow Tie brand’s full-size SUV duo posted a combined 53 percent increase in sales to 45,919 units. Additionally, GMC’s full-size duo, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, which are corporate cousins to the Chevy SUVs and share the same architecture, posted a combined 30 percent increase to 22,269 units.

Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) placed first with a 39 percent swell to 29,258 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes sales of the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed in second place with a 52 percent climb to 20,007 units. The Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales), the Tahoe’s extended-length variant, placed third with a 87 percent jump to 16,661 units. The regular-length GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales), took fourth with a 22 percent bump to 12,471 units, while the extended-length Yukon XL followed in fifth with a 43 percent jump to 9,798 units. It’s worth noting that the GMC duo also outsold the Ford duo. The Jeep Wagoneer took sixth place with a 21 percent drop to 8,075 units. The Nissan Armada placed seventh with a 104 percent leap to 5,915 units, while the Toyota Sequoia took up the last spot with 5,193 deliveries, though sales increased nearly 100-fold year-over-year as the redesigned 2023 Sequoia hits the market.

The GM Authority Take

The Chevy Tahoe and Suburban duo remain kings of the mainstream full-size SUV segment. Combined with their corporate cousins, the GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, GM commands nearly two-thirds of the space in spite of competitors’ new and updated models. In fact, the GMC duo alone outsold both the Ford duo and the rest of the field.

GM derives a substantial amount of its profits from its full-size SUVs, including the Tahoe and Suburban. We expect sales of the duo to remain strong, with supply being the biggest limiting factor for sales not expanding further.

About Chevy Tahoe And Suburban

The 2023 Chevy Tahoe introduces only a handful of updates over the preceding 2022 model, dropping in as the third model year for the latest fifth-generation full-size SUV nameplate. Changes include the addition of Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist. The Tahoe also gets a new Advanced Technology Package that includes the GM Super Cruise hands-free, semi-autonomous driver assistance feature along with expanded driving coverage.

The 2023 model year also offers a new 2023 Chevy Tahoe RST Performance Edition, plus the return of the Brembo Performance Brake Kit.

While the 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Suburban were originally expected to introduce a mid-cycle enhancement for both SUVs, GM Authority has learned that the refresh has been delayed to the 2025 model year, or possibly even later.

When they arrive, we expect these updated models to only cement GM’s current domination of the lucrative full-size SUV segment even more, which is second only to the bread-and-butter full-size truck space.

  1. They are call “full size” SUV’s, but they are not. They are “real size” vehicles. Easily able the get in and out of one. Plenty of elbow space with enough room for three in the second row. With kids, plenty of space for any team sport. If you driven one, a very comfortable ride.

  2. A bit pricey but great looking vehicles. I wish they offered a WT version. I drove a 70’s Suburban for a work truck back in the 80’s. It was the equivalent of today’s WT. 4-speed manual transmission, manual steering and manual brakes, no AC, vinyl seats and etc. I don’t want one that spartan now, but a cheaper basic WT version would be nice.

    1. They do offer the police package which is a bit more basic, but we can’t buy them.

I went by my local dealer. They had maybe 3 or 4 civilian Tahoes or Suburbans, but they must have had 50 police Tahoes. They were everywhere on their lot.

      1. you never could buy gm fleet vehicles… gm has always screamed very loudly at dealers not to do funny business to sell these on the open market. remember the 2011 caprice fiasco with the NJ dealer?

the initial purchaser has to be a fleet user. you need a friend in a small town to get a purchase order and then flip the car to you. thats how you get a brand new used one. thats because they are 20k cheaper than the civvie rip off version. also they are emission exempt.

  3. My Aunt bought a new Tahoe when they first came out in 1995. It was an LS with forest green/silver two-tone paint and a grey cloth interior. Brand new price was $30,000. That was a great truck. She was looking for a bigger vehicle to tow her jet ski and the dealer just got the Tahoe off the carrier…she got comments everywhere she went because nobody had one in our town yet. Now, you can’t hardly touch these things for under $60,000.

    1. $30,000 in 1995 is almost exactly $60,000 in 2023 dollars.

  4. American’s like large comfortable vehicles that can go across the country without worrying about their next fuel stop. Let the market work GM and don’t let the government tell you what people what. Very nice ICE vehicles. Good job !

    1. I agree 100%! GM should build for their customers, period!

  5. Chevy used to build 3/4 ton Suburbans too, but no more. It was easy money because I believe the chassis, drive train, and front end body parts were shared with the pickups.

    1. Most of it is shared between Suburbans and PU’s. The Suburban’s were originally utility trucks with window options. As the vans developed into the delivery/work vehicles, the Suburban started to morph into a more of a passenger vehicle.

  6. Sales numbers are great but they are starting to show their age in interior and powertrain department . Here’s hoping the new gm next gen V8 , small diesel make it into the engine bay soon . Even the Denali ultimate interior isn’t that great compared to the competitors, just saying .

    1. interior on this gen was bad from day one. if you could put the previous interior in the current body it would be the most amazing thing ever.

  7. We’ve had bonefide SOLD orders for Suburbans and Tahoes for high value, repeat customers, that
GM has not been preferenced for over two years… GM’s continued abuse of their customer base continues!!

  8. These are beautiful cars. Still amazed how many people are able or willing to spend upwards of 70k for these cars though.
