Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Silverado sales during the second quarter of 2023 kept the Bow Tie brand’s line of full-size trucks in second place in its segment when ranked by sales volume. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) kept the top spot with an impressive 34 percent increase in sales to 212,516 units, while the Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales) followed in second with a one percent dip to 141,299 units. The Ram Pickup placed third with just a 0.14 percent slip to 117,699 units. The GMC Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales), the Silverado’s corporate cousin, took fourth with a 22 percent bump to 75,810 units. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth place with a 48 percent jump to 32,084 units, and the Nissan Titan placed sixth with a 36 percent swell to 6,512 units. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup recorded 47 deliveries.

We include the GMC Hummer EV Pickup in the lineup along with the all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning, as Ford’s electric truck is shown on the same line as the F-Series. In fact, that same F-Series line item also includes its Super Duty line of heavy duty trucks.

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Silverado sales were down slightly during Q2 2023, a rather disappointing performance. We posit that the decrease caused by inventory related issues, as GM potentially prioritized production of the GMC Sierra over that of the Silverado during the quarter.

It’s worth noting, however, that when we combine sales of the Silverado with those of the Sierra, we see The General as the reigning king of overall full-size pickup truck sales in U.S. in spite of the 212K-plus deliveries of the Ford F-150.

Ample availability of the Silverado will be key to the truck range staying in the green during subsequent quarters.

About Chevy Silverado

The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 arrives as the fourth model year of the fourth-generation nameplate, introducing a few changes and updates over the refreshed 2022 Silverado. The big news for 2023 is the introduction of the even more off-road capable first-ever 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison.

For 2024, the Chevy Silverado 2.7L engine will be branded as TurboMax. Furthermore, the upcoming 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 will receive the second-generation Hydra-Matic 8L80 eight-speed automatic transmission in conjunction with that engine. Meanwhile, the 2024 Silverado High Country will be available with the Midnight Edition Package, and the 2024 Silverado ZR2 will offer the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. That 6.2 liter will sound meaner thanks to a new Active Exhaust system.

Last fall, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD with new exterior styling, an overhauled interior, new tech like standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and upgrades to the powertrain lineup. The updated Silverado HD also offers a new High Country Premium package which replaces the High Country Deluxe package offered previously. Also, the 2024 Silverado HD offers two new 22-inch wheel options.

In April, The General debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 as the flagship off-roader for the Bow Tie brand’s heavy-duty pickup line along with the new Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 Bison, which takes the pickup even further when it comes to off-road capability.

Under the hood, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD cradles the 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine as standard, while the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine is optional. The diesel engine also boasts an improved, SAE-certified output boost to 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. For 2024, both the diesel engine and the gasoline engine now connect to the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission as standard, which replaces the GM six-speed equipped mated to gasoline-powered models previously.

Meanwhile, GM revealed the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado EV over a year ago, with Silverado EV in Silverado EV RST and Silverado EV Work Truck (WT) trims set to launch this year. Other trim levels, including the upcoming Chevy Silverado EV Trail Boss, are also planned. The Chevy Silverado EV rides on the BT1 platform, a dedicated electric architecture that uses Ultium Battery technology.

With production of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV WT officially underway (albeit not yet on sale), Ford responded by giving the F-150 Lightning a substantial price drop.

The Silverado EV is poised to boast sales of GM’s best-selling vehicle even more, as half of Chevy Silverado EV reservation holders are new to GM.

Take a tour of the exterior of the Silverado EV WT in the video below.

  1. With the recent refreshes done to the GM lineup, this is the first time since 2010 that GM has the best, most-competitive lineup of the big-3 trucks. Best = newest refresh and no glaring deficiencies to Ford/Ram.

From 2010-2022 timeframe, it took holding one’s nose to buy a GM full size truck, and I know this from experience having done it 3 times in that timeframe.

Sadly though, Ram is lagging well behind, especially in the HD realm. How much longer can they hold on with the HD series using the old cab/frame? Just go sit in a Ford/GM and then a Ram HD, and the Ram feels tiny in comparison, even if the interior is “nice”. The Ram 1500 is still a competitive offering, still class-leading in many respects but will Ram let it age too long as well?

    1. I would agree with this. I think in the right trim, GM trucks look the best on the outside. The interior is comparable, but Ford edges out GM in design and overall quality (never sat in a Denali though).

Powertrains however is where GM is a half step back. 2.7 GM is a great base engine, 8 speed is a poor choice by GM. 5.3 has enough power but what’s the point of having a v8 in 2023 if it has no character? It’s quiet and soft. The 6.2 asks for premium and has a little more character and obviously more power. What they really need for the next gen is to have 1 good v8. Nostalgia is big and a true to form 350, or at least a 5.7 that runs off 87 octane and makes 400hp is exactly what they need. That and a i6 version of the turbo 4.

I like the GM handling/ steering and they feel sportier than the Ford trucks, but an increase in ride quality would be nice. If you avoid the max package, the new F150 is like riding a couch down the highway as it’s very comfortable.

  4. No one bought the 2023 HDs because the refresh was imminent, plus GM basically stopped making them after a certain point. I know myself I was waiting on the refresh, as I just purchased a full-loaded 2024 2500HD LT 6.6L gasser (it’s optional basically as an LTZ without the expensive lights and minus some unneeded electronic gizmos).

Fleets don’t care, because they’re buying WTs or Customs anyway, but no way was I buying that pre-2024 interior for long-haul camping trips with the family. A much improved, very competitive product now.

    1. You are one of those guys, you probably love telling anyone that you have a “Fully Loaded” Silverado, but funny thing is you don’t, not even close. You have a mid grade version LT. It is missing a descent amount of content to an LTZ and High Country.

      1. Yup, you got me random internet guy! Is it the apex trim level? No. But it has the All-Star Package (Convenience I & II + Safety), Leather Package with Bucket Seats, Z71 Off-Road & Protection Package, Remote Start, Heat Package, Gooseneck Package, Sunroof, Marker Lamps, and a few other odds and ends.

That is basically an LTZ other than some bling and electronic things I, and many other truck owners, do not need. Do you know what it costs to replace one of those integrated LED animated headlamp assemblies? No thank you.

For most people, this is a fully-loaded, full-featured truck. But hey, GM loves you guys who pay up just to have some more accents and bling to impress the neighbors.

I’m sure you’ll sleep better tonight knowing that you put me in my place regarding my truck package. This Bud Light’s for you, random internet guy!

  7. Silverado all by itself is almost always behind Ford. Additionally, Silverado all by itself is irrelevant. Silverado combined with Sierra is what matters, and combined, GM is almost always ahead of Ford.

Looking at the Sales Numbers in this article do you think GM cares Silverado sales dropped? Absolutely not. The decline of Silverado sales was reallocated to Sierra, the premium, more profitable truck. And combined, GM’s total number of trucks sold went up over last year, by a lot.

Yes, Ford’s F150 sales went up too, by a lot, but Ford still lost out to GM, as typically usual.
