Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Chevy Corvette sales continued at the top of the segment during the second quarter of 2023 when ranked by sales volume, as it has for over a dozen years now since we started tracking Corvette sales. More accurately, the Corvette commanded its space with a six percent swell in sales to 9,125 units. Porsche’s two entries placed second and third – the 911 (née Carrera/Targa) with a three percent bump to 3,140 units, just over a third of the Corvette’s deliveries, and 718 (née Cayman/Boxster) with a 20 percent jump to 1,152 units. The two Mercedes-Benz models followed in fourth and fifth – the recently-overhauled AMG SL-Class with 1,083 deliveries and the AMG GT with a 26 percent drop to 711 units. Those five models from the three marques represented the majority of sales in the premium sports car segment, since the remaining half of the field accounted for less than 800 deliveries combined.
As we’ve recognized before, many of the segment contenders cost significantly more than Chevy’s mid-engine sports car and, as a result, these higher-priced rivals typically see lower sales volumes. But that price difference is shrinking, especially when we consider that pricing for the new track-focused 2023 Chevy Corvette Z06 starts at over $100K.

As before, the 911 was the only model other than the Corvette to earn a segment share in the double digits. The AMG SL-Class also earned a seven percent share while the AMG GT held a four percent share, down three percentage points. The rest of the field earned a combined four percent share.
Combining Porsche’s two entries, the 911 and 718 lines, gave the German automaker a 27 percent segment share with 4,292 sales, a full 30 percentage points lower than the Corvette.

The GM Authority Take
The C8 Corvette continues to dominate its segment as the mid-engine Vette enters its fourth model year. Sales this quarter might have been even higher, but GM continues to struggle with being able to build enough of its popular mid-engine performance sports car fast enough.
Barring any unexpected circumstances, we don’t foresee the Corvette sales story changing any time soon. Not only does the (base) C8 Stingray continues to see strong demand, but Chevy is also in the process of expanding the C8 lineup with even higher performance variants like the C8 Z06 and C8 E-Ray. Next on the horizon is the C8 ZR1, followed by the range-topping C8 Zora. The only question is, how will Chevy keep up with demand for its mid-engine winner?
About Corvette
The upcoming 2024 Chevy Corvette will add new active safety tech to its features list to bring it more in line with other Bow Tie brand models, including Automatic Emergency Braking and standard IntelliBeam automatic high-beam headlamps as well as Lane Keep Assist and Lane Departure Warning. The 2024 Corvette will also get new driver mode selection animations.
At the beginning of the 2023 calendar year, GM debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray, featuring the naturally aspirated LT2 from the C8 Stingray mated to an electric motor mounted up front. The E-Ray is also the first-ever production Corvette equipped with front-wheel drive.
The production start of the 2024 Chevy Corvette has been pushed back to September 12th, though GM has already started building 2024 Chevy Corvette E-Ray units for use in the automaker’s Captured Test Fleet program, or CTF.
Additionally, the online configurator tool is live for the entire 2024 Corvette lineup, including for the 2024 Corvette Stingray, the 2024 Corvette Z06, and the 2024 Corvette E-Ray.
Once Z06 production is higher than the current, highly-constrained levels, and the E-Ray has finally launched, Chevy will launch the 2025 Chevy Corvette ZR1. It’s expected to be powered by a boosted variant of the 5.5 V8 LT6 engine found in the Z06, raising raise the performance bar even higher. Recently our spies caught our very first glimpse of 2025 Corvette ZR1 prototypes testing out in the wild. Those shots reveal that the upcoming ZR1 will introduce a new wheel design.

Disappointing with what the Corvette has become.
What was once an obtainable sports car for the hard working blue collar worker, is now an unobtainable vehicle for even a extremely well paid engineer.
Dealer markups and limited build allocations turned a dream car into a nightmare.
I agree with Bran the Greedy Dealers are killing the Corvette…If you gotta pay over STICKER dont buy .
Exactly, I had 2 dealers wanting 10K and 15K over MSRP for LT2 Coupes, and I walked. One of the dealers actually called me 3 weeks after I told him no to see where we were on the corvette. I told him I had just ordered a 2024 LT3 for 3K less than he was for the lower version and a yr older. It’s now been on his lot for 60 days, and looks like it’s going to be their awhile.
Good for you jr…my dealer said he appreciated my business but still wanted 20 over sticker…even after i have been buy cars from him for over 50 years !!!!Sure hope he reads this …..JUST GREED !!
Good for you Jr. I also walked. California dealers were asking 30 – 40k above MSRP. I ordered from Rick Hendricks in Duluth Georgia at MSRP. I paid less than $1,500 to ship. I was to late to do a courtesydelievery. I took just under 11 months.
Adjusted for both monetary and relative market inflation, the MSRP isn’t as high as it seems. And a well paid engineer should be able to afford one, depending on their personal lifestyle and other expenditures.
The secondary, but perhaps more important factor has involved substantial dealer markups. Well, it is after all a free market economy, and they reserve that right. It’s “manufacturers suggested retail price” and not a law. That extends to other products as well; home appliances, electronics, etc.
The reason it’s been so dramatic is because of both the high demand and lack of inventory. The latter has resulted from the pandemic and other supply issues. The occasional labor dispute doesn’t help either.
The might be somewhat trivial, but it’s entering its 5th model year, not the 4th.
Never pay above MRPS. If you live in the States and you have dealers who do that , find one who will not or come to Canada , it is illegal to do that here. An order , of course because if it is on the parking lot , they find a way to make it a used car.
I will be picking up my new 2023 C8 Z51 HT at the NCM in Bowling Green, KY next week (ordered in April). I live in FL but found a dealer in Michigan willing to sell at MSRP. I refused to pay over and waited till I found a dealer who had a real allocation to accommodate me. If buyers would refrain from paying over it would go away but demand for Z06’s & E-Rays is through the roof and will sustain these mark-ups for a while. BTW Porsche dealers are doing the same. Good luck to those still shopping.
GM is just as bad as the dealers price gouging with adding new options that should be included for safety reasons alone. I feel that there are just too many people out there that have more money than they know what to do with and want another statis symbol to make them look important! I wonder just how many OTA updates are available that wouldn’t be but a drop in the bucket cost wise for GM to GIVE US but, would possibly save Lives in the future. Tomg
Interesting how sales volume is still so high, despite the used market being so incredibly soft. My 2023 1LT convertible has only 263 miles on it, yet according to KBB & NADA it’s barely worth sticker price. It’s been for sale since February & the only purchase offers I get lately are from wholesalers. (No thank you)
Jetfixer320 why should your used, one owner car be worth msrp or over when there are dealers (although somewhat limited) selling brand new, never titled Corvettes at msrp? It sounds like you tried to take advantage of someone and flip a car for profit and are now looking at losing or maybe braking even. I’ll keep driving my 2011 convertible before paying a dime over msrp. Although I like the performance of the new Vettes, I still think the lines of the C6 are sexier.
No, it was NEVER my intention to buy the car to “flip” it. Yes, they’re at MSRP now, but at the end of ’22 when I bought mine the market was much stronger. And YES, like a dummy I paid $5k over MSRP. I more or less got talked into the purchase & I almost immediately started regretting it. (Great car, it just isn’t “me”) My current asking price is WELL below what I paid. I know I’m gonna take a massive loss, but that’s on me.
DRIVE IT !!!
Actually Bob, part of why I gave in & bought the C8 in the first place was the belief I’d never get what I REALLY wanted. (CT5-V Blackwing) But now after waiting a bit over 2 years I’ve been told mine will be happening any day now. (Plus I actually got mine thru a dealership that doesn’t have a markup) That’s why I’m purposely keeping the miles off the Corvette.
