Buick Tops J.D. Power 2023 China APEAL Study

In the most recent edition of the J.D. Power China Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study, Buick was ranked first overall, indicating that consumers are extremely satisfied with their new Tri-Shield vehicle.

According to the 2023 J.D. Power China APEAL Study, overall satisfaction across the Chinese automotive industry improved, while the gap between mass market and premium brands continues to widen. Buick was ranked first overall with a score of 755 out of a possible 1,000 points, a notable eight points above second place Dongfeng Nissan at 747.

Notably, the segment average stood at 733.

There were several key findings in this study, including:

  • ICE and NEV each have their own strengths
  • New energy SUVs are significantly ahead of gas-powered SUVs in design
  • First-time buyers in second-tier cities pay more attention to the practicality of functions

As background, the 2023 J.D. Power China APEAL Study is based on the responses from 35,155 owners who purchased their new vehicle between June 2022 and March 2023. The study was fielded from December 2022 to May 2023, and includes data from 230 models across 48 brands, while 81 Chinese cities were surveyed.

“With the growth of new energy vehicle (NEV) sales, the competition between internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE) and NEVs is becoming fiercer,” J.D. Power Auto Product Practice General Manager Elvis Yang said in a prepared statement. “Makers of ICE vehicles need to pay more attention to vehicle design and experience to maintain their position. Meanwhile, second- and third-tier cities are the main areas to purchase ICE vehicles. Automakers need to accurately grasp the preferences of this consumer group, optimize configuration experience to increase product appeal.”

It’s worth noting that the U.S. rendition of the 2023 J.D. Power APEAL Study placed Buick ninth overall with a score of 841 out of a possible 1,000 points. This puts the Tri-Shield brand between rivals Nissan and Ford, which posted scores of 843 and 838, respectively, while the segment average was 837.

  1. Chevrolet is on the list in the middle, but Cadillac is not on the list at all. I wonder why.

    1. Because the charts clearly state the figures are for Mass Market Brands. Cadillac would fall under Luxury.
