Base 2024 Buick GL8 Century Launches In China

Almost ten months after the launch of the new generation of Buick’s large MPV in China with the Avenir and Flagship trims, SAIC-GM has just officially launched the base version of the new 2024 Buick GL8 Century in the Asian country.

General Motors’ main joint venture in China has introduced the base 2024 Buick GL8 Century, which comes to further expand the extensive GL8 family of models in the Chinese market and will serve as the entry-level variant of the fourth-generation MPV. The base GL8 Century sets itself apart from range-topping variants by featuring specific front and rear styling as well as a unique seven-seat configuration.

As exclusively reported by GM Authority last year, the base 2024 Buick GL8 Century gets its own exterior finish that includes a front end with conventional horizontal headlamps, along with Buick’s traditional lighting signature without the vertical elements of more-expensive versions. Additionally, it gets a more prominent chrome stripe linking the headlights with the Buick name, a specific grille with horizontal bars, as well as new bumper trim.

The rest of the base 2024 Buick GL8 Century’s bodywork remains almost identical to that of the Avenir and Flagship variants, except for the rear bumper design and the smaller taillamps that don’t extend downwards. For its part, the interior adopts a new beige colorway with black accents and a unique 2+2+3 seating configuration, with captain’s chairs in the second row and full third-row bench seat.

Mechanically, the base 2024 Buick GL8 Century maintains the same powertrain as the other next-generation MPV variants, comprised of the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY engine paired with SAIC-GM’s 48V mild hybrid system that adds an electric motor and a 48V battery, generating an output of 233 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The engine is mated to GM’s nine-speed automatic transmission.

The newly launched base 2024 Buick GL8 Century is now available for sale at Buick’s official dealer network in China, the only country in the world where the brand’s successful line of full-size MPVs is manufactured and marketed. It comes standard with advanced technology, safety and convenience features designed specifically to make family travel more enjoyable. Pricing for the base GL8 Century is as follows:

  • GL8 Century seven-seat: 469,900 yuan (about $67,700 USD at the current exchange rate)
  • GL8 Century seven-seat Premium: 519,900 yuan ($71,500 USD)

  1. I think there could be a market for this in America… lots of premium trims of current minivans sell well here and are well over 50k

  2. This is yet another awesome vehicle from Buick. GM is very attuned to the Chinese market and this model and it’s variants will sell like hot cakes (egg rolls?!). The new design language looks really good here, especially with the new sophisticated iconic elegant side sweep coving. Now go easy on me friends……as this is made by Chinese workers in GM’s China plants…ok here we go….they will be extremely well built, high quality, reliable vehicles. GM’s Chinese workers are fantastic and the reliability and quality of the Envision proves it. This is my perception as a ‘17 Envision owner. Simply, the best vehicle of the many I’ve owned. Putting politics aside, and I know that’s not easy, the vehicle itself is a fantastic street riding spaceship. Bring it here, now!

  3. Yes, let’s get them to our dealers here in the U.S. I’ll trade my Cadillac in, in a New York minute. When better cars are built, Buick will build them I’ve heard that all my life. I’m a young 93 and own both types .

  4. Traitors make cars in China. What the hell is wrong with you people!

  5. GM is buying back dealerships. They are eliminating competition now that people are accustomed to paying at least MSRP or more. We need a rebirth of automobile manufacturing with no regard for government interference.
