2024 GMC Sierra HD Recalled For Fracturing Steering Gear Shaft

Some 2024 GMC Sierra HD units are involved in product safety recall number N232414720, recently issued by GM for certain 2024 model-year heavy-duty trucks produced with a defective steering gear shaft that might fracture under use.

The problem: a supplier provided GM with steering gear shaft components that could contain a manufacturing defect. These steering gear shafts, used in the 2024 GMC Sierra HD and other models, have the potential to fracture and then break where the steering pitman arm connects to the gear shaft. This completely separates the gear shaft from the steering arm in some cases.

The hazards: the driver will completely lose steering control of the 2024 GMC Sierra HD if the defective steering gear shaft breaks, severing connection with the steering arm. Total loss of steering control could cause a crash or collision, possibly resulting in the Sierra HD, other vehicles, and/or nearby property sustaining damage, and the potential injury or death of vehicle occupants or pedestrians.

The fix: dealerships can repair the defective steering gear shaft of the 2024 GMC Sierra HD free of charge to the customer via replacement of the part (and other associated components like the steering gear pinion shaft / pitman arm nut, if necessary).

GM instructs dealers to complete several verification steps before beginning repair of a potentially affected Sierra HD truck. Possibly affected units are marked “Incomplete Remedy Not Available” on the Investigate Vehicle History screen of the GM Global Warranty Management System. Additionally, the truck should be inspected to determine if the shaft actually needs replacement. The recall document also remarks that only a “very small percentage” of trucks need the steering gear shaft replaced.

Note: all 2024 GMC Sierra HD vehicles currently in dealership inventories should be inspected to see if the steering gear shaft is needed, per GM instructions. Using a potentially affected Sierra HD for demonstrations, trading it to another dealership, or selling it is illegal under federal law until it has been cleared by proper inspection.

If the vehicle passes inspection with no repair required, the dealership must correctly enter it in the system as “Inspect Only – Vehicle Passed Inspection (No Further Action Required),” labor code 9106931, before selling, trading, or demonstrating it.

Affected components: steering gear shaft.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: GM figures there are 1,888 units of the 2024 GMC Sierra HD affected. In addition, 2,005 units of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD are involved, for a total of 3,893 vehicles or 1 percent of overall production.

  1. There’s another low quality supplier to mark off of the list. GM supply chain employees should be able to spot these bad parts through QC inspections before they can get to the assembly line. Someone needs fired.

  2. Yes, I agree Quality Control at its best. Who is General Motors buying this crap from . I bet there’s no issues on the other side building the EV vehicles.

      1. Maybe Nexteer should rename themselves to “Nosteer”? I’m constantly amazed at the loss of quality control that GM displays. GM once had total control of parts & sub-assemblies of its products because all of it was done “in-house”. It seems GM could care less these days. Such a shame

        1. Yet they still charge an extortionate price for these vehicles

          1. This is why they charge so much. Remember. Recalls aren’t free. Someone needs to pay for them

      2. No excuse, contract should be docked until they can prove they are up to the task.

  3. I have yet to know anyone who is a metarulurgist who has xray vision and know that the material making up and validate the shaft was heat treated properly and quenched again per manfacturing standards by visual means. Yes many organizations management does want to gain additional profit and cuts corners. But the process unless directed can just be the supplier providing a cheap bid for the profit padding.

  4. What happened to the American dream of owning a chevy/gmc truck. Not just the 2024 gmc sierra 2500 HD like I have but all the recalls they been having. I bought a 2024 and that year isn’t here yet LOL!! And yet starting off with a recall that could actually kill someone. Keep it up chevy/gm, your starting the year off right.

  5. You gotta love the constant pressure from GM to drive down supplier costs to help increase profits. The straw sometimes breaks the camels back.
