2024 Chevy Silverado HD Recalled For Fracturing Steering Gear Shaft

GM has issued a product safety recall, number N232414720, for certain units of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD that were produced with a steering gear shaft containing a supplier manufacturing defect that could cause the shaft to fracture during use.
The problem: the potentially defective steering gear shaft used in a small number of 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks could fracture at the point where it connects to the steering arm (also known as the pitman arm), causing the steering gear shaft and the steering arm to become disconnected from one another.
The hazards: if the steering gear shaft fractures and connection with the steering arm is lost, it will no longer be possible for the driver of the affected 2024 Chevy Silverado HD to steer the vehicle. This could result in a crash or accident, with possible consequences including damage to the Silverado HD and/or other vehicles, and the potential for injuries or fatalities.
The fix: the fix for affected 2024 Chevy Silverado HD trucks is to replace the steering gear shaft and any associated parts that are damaged or defective, such as the steering gear pinion shaft / pitman arm nut. This repair is carried out free of charge to customers.
Before the repair can be applied, GM instructs dealerships to inspect potentially affected Silverado HD trucks, since only a small percentage of units actually require steering gear shaft replacement. Dealers are further instructed to use the GM Global Warranty Management System to check the Investigate Vehicle History screen, verifying the unit’s involvement if it is marked “Incomplete Remedy Not Available” before beginning work.
Note: The General has instructed dealers to inspect all 2024 Silverado HD units in their inventory and apply the repair as needed. It is a violation of federal law to sell, trade to other dealerships, or use for demonstration purposes any potentially affected Silverado HD unit before correct inspection and application of the fix, if required.
If the vehicle passes inspection with no repair required, the dealership must correctly enter it in the system as “Inspect Only – Vehicle Passed Inspection (No Further Action Required),” labor code 9106931, before selling, trading, or demonstrating it.
Affected components: steering gear shaft.
Affected vehicles:
- 2024 Chevy Silverado HD
- 2024 GMC Sierra HD

My dad worked at Saginaw Steering Gear Plant 2 where power steering gears were made for decades. Never had a catastrophic failure like that. Need to get back to basics. Failures like that should NEVER happen. GM needs to be making more of their own parts like they used to instead of relying on all these suppliers.
Have you seen the union strikes lately? The Unions have a noose around GM’s balance sheet’s neck. The stock has been stagnant for the last five years.
GM seems to have serious quality control problems. Someone needs to go!
That part had no chance of breaking while driving unless the truck was loaded to the Maximum gross weight .
How do you know that?
Typical GM quality or lack there of
I just sold my 2006 Silverado HD2500 LT Crew Cab DuraMax @ 102K miles for $34,000….well maintained and in great condition except for the drivers seat bottom. Guy said he looked for 6 months for an LBZ like mine….GM used to build high quality vehicles but, is stagnated under Queen Mary…Now? Going to dump my 2020 ZR2 Colorado and buy a F150 Raptor. Mary B has turned this life long GM guy into a Ford fan….She needs to go!
