Here’s Why The 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition Gets A Standard Bed-Mounted Spare

Positioned to take the midsize pickup’s off-road abilities to the next level, the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition features an entire suite of upgrades and enhancements over the “normal” AT4X, one of which being the massive wheel and tire combo. Now, here’s why the 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV Edition is equipped as standard with a bed-mounted spare.
The go-anywhere AT4X AEV Edition will be equipped with a bed-mounted spare tire as standard fare, and the reasoning behind this unorthodox decision is quite simple – the 35-inch wheel and tire package doesn’t fit underneath the truck bed. Notably, this is where the spare tire is normally located for all other Canyon trims.
This is an interesting solution that General Motors schemed up with to ensure every Canyon unit is equipped with a spare tire. In fact, The General actually lengthened the wheelbase of the third-gen midsizer to accommodate the beadlock-capable wheels and 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires that the AEV Edition is equipped with.
As a reminder, the 2024 GMC Canyon AT4X AEV Edition takes the extremely capable AT4X model and cranks the off-roading abilities up another notch with a bevy of all-terrain features. These include stamped steel front and rear bumpers, and five ultra-high strength and hot-stamped Boron steel skid plates. For the true off-road junkies out there, it may be worth noting that the AEV Edition features a 38.2-degree approach angle, a 26-degree departure angle, and a 26.9-degree break-over angle, as well as 12.2 inches of ground clearance.
In regard to powertrain, the AEV Edition boasts the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, which tuned in the Turbo High-Output variant and rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. Output is directed to all four wheels through the second-gen GM eight-speed automatic transmission, as well as a two-speed transfer case and power-locking front and rear differentials.
Under the skin lies an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform, while production for the 2024 model year will kick off at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri in October 2023.

A 35″ tire in that little bed will dang near fill it up!
I don’t know if anyone else had any photos of what the bed spare tire mount looks like but I didn’t see any. Seems like that would have been included with the article.
there’s some videos on youtube of a Bison that has the spare mounted in the bed. It’s located on drivers side of bed running parallel to the from bed wall.
So, maybe GM instructed GMA to NOT show the spare mounted in the bed. As Gayle suggested, it may fill up the bed and not leave enough space for doing any hauling- which is what a pickup truck is for.
GM should have made the bed shallower and raised it up to accommodate the spare (and of course mount a boron skid plate under it). BOOM! Problem solved!
@Hank: Search YouTube.
@Hank: Go into YouTube and search 2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison. There are some videos of the spare tire carrier.
I’m not dying to see it, nor am I extremely interested enough to go through the effort to search YouTube for it. I just thought that since the the topic of the article was the spare tire mount, that the article was incomplete without at least one photo of the mount🤷
Looks like it could be a safety issue the tire blocks half of the rear window and you’ll never be able to put a tonneau cover on. So going off-road camping all of your gear and luggage will be exposed.
Since they still can’t deliver the 2023’s How in hell do they expect to sell the 2024.
I would rather have a Tacoma…..
Less problems….
May Canyon finely came and unfortunately is a big disappointment. Sorry I traded my 2030 for it. The electronics suck. When washing it the fenders buckle in. Paper thin. It is a gas hog compared to the 5.3 in my full size.
yea I’m sure its worse than the 5.3
Just took a small trip with my 2023 Canyon, towing a trailer and my best mileage was 10.8 mpg! Nice truck but what a gas guzzler
