General Motors has issued a service update for certain units of the refreshed GMC Sierra 1500 pickup equipped with the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine and non-ETRS transmission due to a problem related to a faulty engine control module (ECM).
Affected Sierra examples may have a condition where the ECM doesn’t properly respond to certain service tool requests for the datafile CALID (part number) or CVN (checksum). If the ECM were to fail to respond to service tools, then affected Sierra 1500 units have the potential to fail an emissions inspection / maintenance (I / M) test.
Certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect the ECM and replace as necessary, free of charge. Notably, it should take techs roughly 30 min to perform the fix. General Motors did not specify exactly how many units of the 2022 Sierra 1500 this service update covers. The service bulleting also affects 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 units.
GM will notify owners of affected vehicles and instruct them to make an appointment with their dealer. As a reminder, the 3.0L I6 LZ0 was introduced for the refreshed 2022 Sierra 1500 model, and replaces the 3.0L I6 LM2 as the full-size pickup’s diesel offering. Featuring a handful of updates and enhancements over the outgoing LM2 engine, LZ0 is rated at 305 horsepower and 495 pound-feet of torque, a 10-percent increase in power and a 7.6-percent increase in torque in comparison to older powerplant.
