GM To Open EV Parts Warehouse Near Factory Zero Plant In Michigan

GM is building a new EV parts warehouse on the site of a former American Motors Corporation building in Detroit. The new warehouse will provide parts for new GM EVs produced at the GM Factory Zero plant in Detroit. The new warehouse is scheduled to open in the second quarter of the 2024 calendar year.

According to a report from Crain’s Detroit Business, the facility is expected to create 350 new jobs. Although GM will own and control the new warehouse, its operation will be handled by Logistics Insight Corp., an affiliate of Universal Logistics Holdings Inc. Universal Logistics also operates a 1 million-square-foot parts sequencing plant on Detroit’s east side for GM rival Stellantis.

The site redevelopment will be handled by NorthPoint Development LLC, and will be aided by $32 million in tax increment financing from the city and $5.1 million in state brownfield incentives. The site is located at 14250 Plymouth Road, and was previously abandoned in 2010. When completed, the new warehouse will span some 793,520 square feet, and will provide parts for the production of the GMC Hummer EV, the Chevy Silverado EV, and Cruise Origin autonomous robotaxi.

The GM Factory Zero plant is located at 2500 East Grand Boulevard in Detroit, and spans more than 4 million square feet. The facility is GM’s first EV-dedicated production facility, and produces a range of GM Ultium-based vehicles. The facility was previously known as the GM Detroit-Hamtramck facility, but was retooled following a $2.2 billion investment, reopening in 2021 with the production launch of the GMC Hummer EV.

GM reportedly has plans for another site in Palace of Auburn Hills in Michigan that will serve as a “value-added assembly” plant supporting EV production at the GM Orion Assembly plant in Orion Township. The Orion Assembly plant is currently undergoing a $4 billion retooling to support electric vehicle production.
