Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Chevy Colorado sales pushed the Bow Tie brand’s midsize pickup truck into second place in its segment when ranked by sales volume during the first quarter of 2023. The Toyota Tacoma continued to command the top spot, while also being the only model which had sales in the green with a 14 percent bump to 63,262 units, representing nearly half of all segment deliveries. The Colorado placed second with a 12 percent dip to 19,909 units. The Nissan Frontier took third with a 17 percent slide to 17,213 units, followed by the Jeep Gladiator in fourth with a 34 percent drop to 13,751 units. The Ford Ranger (see running Ford Ranger sales) took fifth with a 22 percent decline to 12,618 units. The GMC Canyon (see running GMC Canyon sales), the Colorado’s corporate cousin, finished out the short list with an 11 percent slip to 6,708 units.

Sales of GM’s two midsize pickups, the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon, combined for 26,617 deliveries and a cumulative 20 percent segment share. While these results are healthy, they duo still moved less than half the units of the Tacoma. The Colorado outsold the Canyon nearly three-to-one this quarter.

The midsize mainstream pickup truck segment dipped seven percent to 133,461 units in Q2 2023, meaning Colorado sales underperformed the segment average.

Below, we provide Honda Ridgeline sales for informational purposes, as the model straddles the midsize and full-size pickup truck segments, placing it above the Gladiator and Ranger in terms of sales this quarter.

The GM Authority Take

The lackluster Chevy Colorado sales performance during the second quarter of 2023 can be attributed to a completely normal process involved in a generational changeover. Even so, Chevy’s midsizer still managed to place second in the segment, only bested by the incredibly popular Toyota Tacoma. We expect Colorado sales to rebound later this year as availability and inventory improve, allowing more and more buyers to take delivery of the next-generation 2023 Colorado.

About Chevy Colorado

The all-new, third-generation 2023 Chevy Colorado arrives featuring a new exterior, a new powertrain, plenty of on-board technology, and a completely revised interior. The new model rides on an updated platform, resulting in a more refined truck that is also more capable off-road. Under the hood resides one of two powertrains – the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine as well as the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B engine in Turbo Plus and Turbo High Output configurations. The new powerplants are mated to a new-generation eight-speed automatic transmission, which is vastly improved compared to the preceding GM eight-speed automatic, though a few issues still remain.

2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Bison

GM just debuted the all-new 2024 Chevy Colorado ZR2 Bison, the highly capable off-road midsize pickup truck developed in partnership with American Expedition Vehicles (AEV). For 2024, the Bison will be offered as a standalone trim level rather than as a package. In addition to a wealth of standard components from AEV, the 2024 Colorado ZR2 Bison also incorporates development input from off-road racing champion Chad Hall, and was refined on the Rubicon Trail to boot, adding new features like front and rear jounce control dampers.

With GM taking on the Toyota Tacoma with its next-generation midsize trucks offering new levels of off-road capability, sales should begin taking an upward swing for both the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

  1. There has been 0 inventory of the old gen or new gen trucks for most of the last 12 months. A few trucks come in and they are presold.
I visited 2 of the largest GM dealers in my area , they both had 4-5 trucks that just arrived , but all were presold. There was one Z71 that just came which is what i would buy, but it was a customer order and he waited 10 months !!
Hopefully they can ramp up production and I will order a 24 as soon as the orders open up .
GM mid size trucks will never catch Toyota in sales , and its simply that GM does not have enough capacity to build them.
They need a second plant to build them, that wont happen with the push to electric. We are 25 years away from complete adoption of technology to replace ICE models ( or longer) so GM is leaving a lot of sales on the table.
I will order and wait to get a new Colorado, most people will not !!

  2. Make a long bed and I will buy one. I don’t need a truck for groceries getting, extra foot long is huge to me.

    1. So that extra foot is so you can get that box of Fruity Pebbles?

  3. Our 2023 Colorado LT was built the end of April. It is still in Wentzville MO waiting for transport. According to GM, you can order a 2024 next month. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the 2023’s shipped before they start building 2024’s?? Plus, I really do not want to drive my 2023 home with zero miles and it is already a year old.

    1. Why I decided to wait and likely order a 2024 ZR2 as soon as possible. But I don’t suppose the first of those would arrive before late February or perhaps April with GM’s current turtle delivery pace.

  6. So bizarre. Get in 4 or 5 and then go 45 days without one. Ridiculous! Mary doesn’t know squat about logistics.

    1. You think Mary is sitting in her office dispatching trucks. LOL!!!

      1. No, but she has the guy who oversees the dispatching on her speed dial and believes their lame excuses instead of firing them.

  7. New offerings from Chevy and GMC should help sales numbers.
