C8 Corvette Owner Shows Off, Promptly Crashes Into Mailbox: Video

The mid-engine platform in the C8 Corvette is fantastic for traction, but that can backfire when attempting to show off with some donuts, as demonstrated by the individual behind the wheel of the C8 Corvette Stingray featured in the following video.

Making the rounds recently on social media, the video is just a few seconds long, but that’s all it takes for this driver to turn their new C8 Corvette Stingray into next week’s collision repair bill.

The video opens on a two-lane road out in the country, where we see several people standing around, checking out the C8 Corvette. The Vette slowly rolls down the shoulder, its headlights on during what appears to be the early evening. A few other cars roll by as the C8 Corvette driver idles on the side of the road.

Suddenly, after we see a car pass on the left, the C8 Corvette driver nails the throttle, cranking the steering wheel over the left. The rear end of the Corvette slides out, pirouetting the Vette into the adjacent lane, two black streaks left on the pavement behind it.

So far, so good. Not exactly the most impressive display of driving skill of all time, but at least the Corvette didn’t hit anything. But that’s when things start to go wrong.

With the steering wheel still cranked to the left, the Corvette corners around until it’s perpendicular to the two-lane road. The driver then stabs the throttle again. However, the throttle application isn’t enough to get the rear end sideways, and instead, the C8 Corvette plows forward – right into a mailbox, and barely missing a nearby pickup truck.

The video cuts out shortly after the Corvette luckily stops within inches of a Chevy S-10. Either way, that’s gotta be pretty embarrassing for all involved. Moral of the story – don’t attempt donuts on public roads lined by parked cars and people.

    2. Reckless driving has nothing to do with the manufacturer. Just like Ford Mustangs are also not spectator magnets. These are all operator errors. The C8 is a fantastic car.

    1. Ron Fellows owners school, day 2, short class on use of traction control button:
Instructor says ” NEVER turn off traction control , end of lesson”.
Although we were taken on a wet , empty, pavement and allowed to do some
seriously fun donuts, with instructor in the car.
I think active traction management is what it is called ATM.
In the class were a few people that wanted to know how to do burn-outs and donuts. Classic hot rod moves.
I am not able to get my C8 to do burn outs with ATM on even if I pull in clutch and drop it, so in this video, I am just guessing that driver turned off traction control, just a guess.

  12. The purpose of doing donuts on the wet concrete at Ron Fellows with traction control turned of was to show you the difference with the car in the weather mode … it will hardly ever spin out!

  15. Nothing against the author but why is giving attention to unsafe motorists important to post on GM Authority, or is this yet another GMA journalist’s ploy to grab a headline just because a GM vehicle was involved? And please don’t say it’s intended as a “safety” message. All this helps to do is spread stupidity.

  19. Thank god for on spot video cameras, without them, we’d never know (unless you were there) just what really goes on when a “Brain Fart” takes over adults using poor judgement in any instance involving the misuse of a high performance vehicle. I never understood (and as a late model Corvette owner for many years now) the art of doing donuts in your Corvette. Now, taking off my TC (Traction Control) on a long and open/empty paved road in the middle of nowhere just to “smoke ’em if you got ’em” in a straight line can literally melt the back tires until you back off the throttle which can be fun or while at the local drag strip, making a “smoky burnout” can fun too, stupid but fun. However doing a donut in the middle of a traffic busy street with onlookers seems somewhat childish if not downright scary and yes, embarrassing when and if you were to hit something…uh, like a mailbox for instance with folks filming your stupidity.
Oh well, acts like this can and does support the auto repair business, the auto parts supplier business, the tire replacement business and in this instance, the “Mail Box” replacement business. I guess there is an upside then to doing stupid stuff like this, it’s Capitalism at it’s very best…everyone (sort of) wins! I never thought of doing donuts as a business venture!
