Meet The Concept That Inspired The GMC Canyon AT4X

The 2023 GMC Canyon got its big debut in August of 2022, bringing with it an all-new third generation complete with a long list of updates and changes. Among these was the new 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X trim level, an off-roader variant packed to the brim with equipment designed to conquer the trails. However, prior to the debut of the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X, General Motors unveiled the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX Concept as inspiration for the production-spec AT4X. Now, we’re taking a closer look at the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX Concept, which was renamed Canyon AT4 Concept following its introduction, and seeing how it compares to the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X.

Making its debut at the Overland Expo Mountain West event in 2021, the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX Concept features a variety of upgrades outside, inside, and under the skin to enhance its off-road-capability. Among these are wider wheel flares with integrated task lamps, a unique grille and headlamps, a light bar, and AT4 badging. The concept also incorporates a heavy-duty front bumper and winch, extensive underbody protection, off-road rocker panel protectors, and 17-inch AEV Crestone wheels wrapped in 33-inch BFGoodrich KM3 Mud-Terrain tires. Off-road specs included a 27.7-degree approach angle and 10 inches of ground clearance.

As for the bits under the skin, the GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX Concept runs cast-iron control arms, Multimatic DSSV dampers, and electronic locking differentials for the front and rear. Under the hood, the concept features the naturally aspirated 3.6L V6 LFX gasoline engine. A variety of accessories were tacked on as well, such as a rooftop tent, stainless steel bed cap, a retractable awning, jerry cans, a solar panel, a cooler kitchenette, and additional storage.

Meanwhile, the production-spec 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X also features a taller, wider stance, plus 33-inch MT tires for traction. The exterior shows off the new styling of the third-gen Canyon, while the side markers on the flared wheel arches are orange. Off-road specs include 10.7 inches of ground clearance with a 36.9-degree approach angle, a 25-degree departure angle, and 24.5-degree breakover angle. Like the concept, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X also features Multimatic DSSV shocks, front and rear e-lockers, and extensive underbody protection.

For those customers that need something a little closer to the original concept, the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X also offered the Edition 1 package, which includes an off-road bumper and safari bar, front and rear-facing underbody cameras with wash function, a winch, 17-inch beadlock-capable wheels, a reconfigurable bed rail system, and a performance front skid plate, plus unique badging and a 30-inch light bar.
