Here’s When 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 Production Will Start

Most trim levels of the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD pickup began rolling off the assembly line in early March, 2023. However, production of the off-road performance focused 2024 Silverado HD ZR2 was announced for a summer 2023 start, with the specific month previously unknown.

Now, GM Authority has learned when start of regular production (SORP) for the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 is scheduled to kick off from sources familiar with the situation.

Production of the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 will begin in August, according to the information gained by GM Authority. Unlike the standard 2024 Chevy Silverado HD, which is built at both the GM Flint plant in Michigan and the GM Oshawa plant in Canada, the ZR2 will be produced only at the Flint plant.

According to a GM Canada representative speaking to GM Authority about the matter, the ZR2 will be produced only at Flint for reasons of manufacturing efficiency. Notably, the off-road variants of other GM nameplates such as the Chevy Silverado 1500 ZR2 are also produced only at Flint and not at Oshawa.

Joining GM’s growing lineup of pickup variants with enhanced off-road capability, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 shows off trim level styling with a unique front grille, flow-tie emblem, unique wheel opening molding with integrated mudguards, ZR2 badging in the grille bar, and a 1.5-inch suspension lift giving it a taller stance.

The Silverado HD ZR2’s off-road equipment list includes Multimatic DSSV dampers, a bigger steel transfer case skid plate, a front aluminum skid plate, a rear locker, and 18-inch aluminum wheels fitted with 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires.

The ZR2 also offers a new Off-Road mode that adjusts the brakes, traction control, stability control, throttle response, transmission shifts, and locking rear axle to boost off-pavement performance. An even higher-level off-road performer, the Silverado HD ZR2 Bison, debuted in April and is also on its way.

The new Silverado HD ZR2 trim level is available exclusively in the 2500 Crew Cab configuration. Standard motivation is provided by the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine supplying 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, while the uprated 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine developing 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque is optional.

Both powerplants are linked to the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission as standard. As far as structure is concerned, the 2024 Chevy Silverado HD rides on a more-capable variant of the GM T1 platform.

  1. I just want a 3.0 turbo diesel with the max tow package. It is no longer shown as an option, why?

  3. Normal intelligent people should be able to figure out that we have space in our economy and our lives for both EVs and ICE powered vehicles. Having owned both, they both have their advantages and disadvantages. I haven’t gotten any “Biden Handouts and Welfare”, but what do political rants have to do with the building of HD trucks? This site is supposed to be about GM and its products, not which presidential candidate you favor.

  4. No 1500’s are produced in Flint as mentioned in the article. 1500’s are Fort Wayne, Mexico and some Oshawa. Flint is strictly 2500 and 3500 production of both nameplates.

  5. false information. Every 1500 zr2 in current inventory vin starts with a 3 which indicates mexico assembly. The very expensive premium 1500 zr2 appears to be 100% made in mexico. Very disappointing!!!!

    1. This truck pictured is a Silverado HD ZR2, a 2500. They are only built in Flint Michigan. Flint builds all models and cab/bed configurations of the Silverado and Sierra Heavy Duty truck. The 2500/3500. Canada builds some versions of the HD Silverado and some versions of the light duty trucks. Unfortunately Mexico builds a lot of the expensive light duty trucks. But Mexico only builds light duty trucks.
