Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Yukon sales of the full-size SUV family took second place in the mainstream full-size SUV segment during the first quarter of 2023 when ranked by sales volume – a spot it earned over a year ago by outselling the Ford Expedition and all other rivals with the exception of Chevy.

Combined Chevy Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) and Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) sales remained at the top of the charts, as they have for over a dozen years now since GM Authority started tracking sales. The Bow Tie brand’s full-size SUV duo, which is the corporate relative of the GMC Yukon, posted a combined 13 percent uptick in sales to 41,189 units. Individually, the regular-length Tahoe took first place with a 14 percent bump to 27,257 units. GMC’s full-size SUV duo, the regular-length GMC Yukon and extended-length Yukon XL, followed in second with a seven percent drop to 19,723 units.

The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes sales of the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, placed third with a 99 percent growth to 19,359 units. The Suburban, which is the extended-length variant of the Tahoe, took fourth with a 12 percent bump to 13,932 units. The Nissan Armada placed fifth with a 343 percent leap to 7,272 units. The Jeep Wagoneer took sixth with a 21 percent slide to 5,560 units, followed by the Toyota Sequoia in last place in spite of a 939 percent leap in sales to 4,384 units.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Yukon family had a very healthy finish during the first quarter of the 2023 calendar year, outselling the Ford Expedition family once again – a circumstance that has become the norm following the launch of the all-new Yukon family for the 2021 model year. The Yukon and Yukon XL were only outsold by their corporate cousins – the Chevy Tahoe and Suburban, which together enabled The General to continue dominating the full-size SUV segment, accounting for nearly two-thirds of all sales.

But despite placing second and outselling the Expedition, the Yukon family was in the red. We attribute this to unfavorable inventory and strong competitive pressures in the highly-competitive full-size SUV space.

About GMC Yukon And Yukon XL

As noted above, the Yukon family was overhauled (re-engineered and redesigned) for the 2021 model year. With new looks, technology, enhanced performance, and optimized efficiency, Big Red’s duo, along with Chevy’s Tahoe/Suburban, continue to appeal to a wide range of customers.

For the 2023 GMC Yukon duo, GM introduced a new range-topping 2023 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate as “the most premium Yukon ever offered.” It comes standard with Vader chrome exterior trim, 22-inch wheels, full-grain leather upholstery, open-pore wood trim, premium audio equipment, and more, including GM’s Rear Seat Media System.

The 2023 Yukon duo also gets expanded coverage for GM’s hands-free, semi-autonomous Super Cruise driver assistance technology.

Refreshed 2024 GMC Yukon XL prototype revealing first-ever 24-inch wheels

Refreshed 2024 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models are set to arrive next year. We spied the 2024 GMC Yukon for the first time a year ago February, and a month later caught the 2024 GMC Yukon Denali Ultimate testing. In December we spied the refreshed 2024 GMC Yukon testing again.

The refreshed 2024 Yukon AT4 was spied testing for the first time, and the upcoming 2024 Yukon was caught rolling on 24-inch wheels. Currently the largest wheel diameter on offer for the GMC Yukon are 22-inchers. Additionally, we caught a glimpse of the refreshed 2024 Yukon interior.

These updated models will further cement GM’s domination of the lucrative full-size SUV segment even more, which is second only to the bread-and-butter full-size truck space.

  1. GM dominates the most important SUV segment earnings far more than Toyota does with Rav4. Ford, aside from F-150 & Bromco, isn’t doing very well.
No wonder Ford debt is junk and GM stock holds steady.
Living in NY far more GM and FCA NA models are on the road then Ford which is suprising
