GMC Sierra HD Recalled For Inadequate Diesel Fuel Pump Flow

GM has issued a product safety recall for certain units of the 2017 to 2019 GMC Sierra HD pickup truck motivated by the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine, and fitted with the dual fuel tank feature (RPO code N2N), because of a potential rear fuel pump defect.
The problem: the rear fuel pump of affected vehicles, including the 2017 to 2019 GMC Sierra HD and certain units of the 2017 to 2019 Chevy Silverado HD, may malfunction or become damaged so it transfers inadequate fuel from the auxiliary fuel tank to the front fuel tank.
The hazards: if insufficient fuel is pumped from the auxiliary (rear) fuel tank to the front fuel tank in affected 2017 to 2019 GMC Sierra HD trucks, the pickup might stall. Stalling in certain situations could increase the chance of an accident.
The fix: dealerships should inspect affected GMC Sierra HD trucks to see if the auxiliary fuel tank and/or auxiliary fuel tank pump module are damaged. If damage is detected, GM instructs the dealership to replace the auxiliary fuel tank and pump module.
Additionally, the dealership should install a new vent hose (also called the diesel auxiliary fuel tank vent line) on the recalled vehicle’s real fuel tank assembly to prevent future problems with the auxiliary fuel pump and tank.
GM further states in its recall notice that affected GMC Sierra HD units currently in inventory cannot be sold, traded to other dealerships, or used for demonstrations until the required fix has been applied. Delivering a recalled vehicle without first repairing it as described is a violation of federal law by the involved dealership.
Affected components: auxiliary fuel tank, auxiliary fuel tank fuel pump module.
Affected vehicles:
- 2017 GMC Sierra HD
- 2018 GMC Sierra HD
- 2019 GMC Sierra HD
- 2017 Chevy Silverado HD
- 2018 Chevy Silverado HD
- 2019 Chevy Silverado HD
Number of affected vehicles: GM says that 186 vehicles in total are affected by the recall, including both GMC Sierra HD and Chevy Silverado HD pickup trucks.
Due to the low number of trucks involved, The General suggests that dealers should not order the required parts as shelf stock, but only when an affected unit is present and identified.
Owners should: owners of affected GMC Sierra HD units who have additional questions or comments can call the GMC customer service number listed below, referencing the GM recall number.
