Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Hummer EV Pickup sales during the first quarter of 2023 kept the electric supertruck behind its primary competitor in the off-road-focused electric pickup truck space. The Rivian R1T accounted for 3,450 deliveries to the GMC Hummer EV Pickup’s two deliveries.

By comparison, GM’s other all-electric model using Ultium batteries – the Cadillac Lyriq – moved 968 units during the same timeframe. The Hummer EV Pickup posted 99 deliveries in the year-ago quarter, while moving 854 units in all of 2022.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Hummer EV Pickup sales were nearly nil during the first quarter of 2023 as a result of minimal production volumes. However, GM is working on ramping that up.

Production of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup was taken offline this past November in order to upgrade the Factory Zero plant for production of the Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV. Hummer EV Pickup production finally restarted in February of this year, with about 500 units built during the month and nearly 1,000 units in March. That brings the total Hummer EV Pickup units built in calendar year 2023 to 1,479 through the end of March. Clearly, almost none of these made it to dealers for delivery to customer during the first quarter.

By comparison, over 5,000 units of the Hummer EV Pickup were produced in 2022 and a total of 6,509 units have been built over the lifetime of the new model.

Earlier this year GM said it plans to strongly increase GMC Hummer EV production volume during the second half of the 2023 calendar year. Prospective customers placed approximately 90,000 reservations in total for the Pickup and GMC Hummer EV SUV. The automaker stopped taking reservations for both battery electric Hummer models around the 90,000 mark.

However, GM EV production targets are challenged by battery supply. The automaker aims to be the North American EV market leader by mid-decade, announcing early last year that it expects to reach a capacity of one million EV units in North America by the end of 2025. A recent analysis from Reuters, however, stated that GM’s 1-million-unit goal may be hampered by limited supplies of batteries and a slow production ramp-up at its new U.S. battery plants.

About GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup begins in June with the nameplate set to introduce a handful of important updates and changes over the preceding 2023 model. That includes the launch of two entry-level trim levels, specifically the 2 and 2X. They will join the range-topping Edition 1 and 3X trims to round out the all-electric Hummer off-road pickup truck lineup for the 2024 model year.

Another important update for the 2024 Hummer EV Pickup is the introduction of the new Omega Edition, a limited-run variant that includes a unique matte paint finish, unique wheels, and a few other unique bits and pieces.

Higher production output is key to growing sales of the Hummer EV Pickup and Hummer EV SUV. This will be key, as GM expects the SUV variant to account for roughly 60 percent of total Hummer EV sales, and the Pickup variant to follow with 40 percent.

Both Hummer EV variants ride on the GM BT1 platform, powered by Ultium Batteries and Ultium Drive motors. A different variant of the same architecture underpins the upcoming Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV.

  1. So why did GM introduce the Hummer and then take a 100,000 orders for it if they knew they had just a few thousand batteries (over a 2 1/2 year production period) to allocate towards production. GM always has an excuse for everything without taking accountability for this platform launch disaster. Hoping that GM can actually reach full production schedule on the Hummer by 2027.

    1. As the story says, Hummer production was taken offline to upgrade the plant for Silverado EV and Hummer SUV production. Rivian R1T sales haven’t been setting the world on fire. The R1S is going to be their bread and butter. GM is smart to start with the work truck because, for those buyers, it’s straight about the bottom line, and they can calculate if an EV makes financial sense.
